CHANDIGARH, 08.10.24-The Foreign Students’ Cell and Postgraduate Department of Sociology at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of Internal Quality Assurance Cell and, in collaboration with Government College, Chamba, organised a workshop titled ‘Legal Empowerment for Women: Breaking Barriers and Building Justice’. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Navneet Arora, University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The session aimed to educate students about the various legal aspects related to their empowerment, enhance legal literacy, and address issues concerning gender justice. Prof. Arora’s presentation covered the issues women face today, such as domestic violence, sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence. The expert discussed various legal avenues available for women to address these challenges, focusing on legal aid mechanisms designed to empower them.The workshop also familiarised the participants with various support platforms available to women, such as the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), the National Commission for Women, Mission Shakti- One Stop Centre, Nari Niketan, and movements like Me Too were also discussed. The event concluded with an interactive session where participants engaged with the speaker, seeking advice on how to navigate legal challenges. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of around 85 students, reflecting the growing interest in legal empowerment and gender justice.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded the organisers as she highlighted the relevance of such awareness sessions that empower the stakeholders with knowledge about their rights and relevant legal provisions. She asserted that in today’s age, legal literacy is one of the important facets that should not be ignored.
