TEAM ULLAS SETS TARGET OF 100% LITERACY ACROSS THE STATE, EXAMINATION SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 21
Mohali/Chandigarh, September 16:The ULLAS, Ujjwal Likhai aur Saksharta, Project is a National Initiative aimed at achieving universal literacy in India, with a specific focus on adult non-literate individuals. It is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and state-level education departments to bridge the literacy gap among adults, particularly in underserved or marginalized communities. The project's primary objective is to enable adults to read, write, and comprehend basic information, thereby empowering them to be more self-reliant in daily tasks and enhancing their quality of life.
The ULLAS project aligns with the broader national goal of achieving 100% literacy across the country. By focusing on non-literate adults, the initiative hopes to foster greater socio-economic development and reduce inequalities that stem from illiteracy.
The Department of Education Chandigarh is playing an instrumental role in realizing this national vision. The project's ultimate goal is to ensure that adult learners are self-sufficient and able to carry out essential routine tasks without dependence on others. The success of the ULLAS project will not only enhance personal empowerment but will also contribute significantly to national development.
Under the leadership of Mr. Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, The Director of School Education and the coordination of Mrs. Raj Bala, Principal of GMSSS Sector 33, has formed TEAM ULLAS which been working relentlessly to achieve the target of 100% literacy in the region. On the bases of extensive surveys undertaken across the region, this TEAM ULLAS that consists of government teachers have identified 15305 adult non literates. 18 Core Committee members Team has been formulated as A State Resource Group to guide, help and visit the schools for tracking ground level work in progress in Cluster schools.
The Education Department has set up dedicated centers named Vidya Samiksha Kendra in each school where volunteers and trainers teach the learners during their free periods in school hours. Many teachers are taking free classes at homes are convenient public places like community halls and parks. Volunteers play a critical role in delivering education to remote or underserved areas where formal educational facilities may be lacking.
Once registered, the non-literate adults are provided with basic literacy education.
The curriculum is designed to be practical, focusing on essential life skills. This includes learning to read and write in the local language, understanding basic arithmetic, and acquiring digital literacy skills.
The Education Department has also launched several awareness campaigns to promote the ULLAS project. These campaigns highlight the importance of literacy for personal and community development and encourage more non-literate adults to join the program. The scheduled exam date is 21st September 2025, Sunday so that working learner can come to appear flexible timings from 9am to 5pm as convenient to adult learner’s routine.
