FUNCTION ON STATISTICS DAY ORGANIZED IN CHANDIGARH

Chandigarh, June 29, 2017-In recognition of the notable contributions made by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in the field of economics, planning and development of statistics, Regional Office of National Sample Survey Office, Chandigarh celebrated the Statistics Day at Kendriya Sadan, Sector 9, Chandigarh, today.  

  Sh. Harbinder Singh, Deputy Director General, NSSO (FOD), Haryana & Chandigarh speaking on the occasion highlighted the importance of administrative statistics and reliability of data. Prof. Kanchan Jain, Chairperson, Deptt. of Statistics, Punjab University Chandigarh        highlighted the Contribution of (Late.) Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis in Indian Statistical System. Sh. M. L. Sharma, Economic and Statistical Advisor, Punjab delivered the lecture on Compilation and Generation of Administrative Reports at State level. Sh. K.S. Bhatnagar, Joint Director-cum Assistant Registrar General (CSR), Directorate of Census Operations, Punjab & Chandigarh addressed the participants on topic of Census in India.

 

Sh. Singh further said that the objective of this day was to create public awareness among the people, especially the younger generation for drawing inspiration from Professor P. C. Mahalanobis about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. This day was celebrated by faculty from university, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics and Statistical departments of central and state government and Labour Department of UT Chandigarh. The theme for Statistics Day-2017 was “Administrative Statistics”. The function was attended by about 55 Officers/Officials working in Sub Regional offices of NSSO, wings of the central, state government Directorate of Economics and Statistics, CIF & DCO Punjab and Chandigarh.

FUNCTION ON STATISTICS DAY ORGANIZED IN MOHALI

 

 Chandigarh, June 29, 2017- National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division) Regional Office, Mohali celebrated the 11th Statistics Day today to pay tribute to late Prof. Sh, P.C.Mahalanobis in recognition to the contribution made by the professor in the fields of Economic planning and Statistics. The subject “Administrative Statistics” was theme of the day.

 

         On the occasion Deputy Director General, Sh. S.K.Madaan after paying tribute to the “Father of Statistics” late Prof P.C.Mahalanobis gave a brief overview of the importance of the statistics in formulation of planning and development.He also threw light on the evaluation of various techniques for data collection,tabulation and dissemination ever since late Prof. .P.C.Mahalanobis took over the reins of setting up and smooth functioning of Indian Statistical System.  He also stressed upon the need of Statistics in running day-to-day administration

 

        Sh.Tirath Singh, Director,DES Punjab elaborated that how  Indian Statistical system owe so much to  late Prof.Mahalanobis as he introduced various statistical sampling techniques, pilot surveys and other large scale surveys for planning purposes.

     Smt.  Kanchan Jain,Professor,Department of Statistics ,Punjab University who was also chief guest on the occasion, also informed the participants how late Prof.Mahalanobis was not only a great mathematician and a statistician but also a person deeply rooted to Indian culture and other subjects.She also elaborated on the functions of central and state agencies responsible for collection,compilation and publication of dataand alsohow various departments of governments use such data for effective implementation of policies.
