M.Phil/Ph.D guidelines reviewed
Panjab University, Chandigarh convened a meeting of all Chairpersons/Directors/
Coordinators of PU teaching departments/Institutions/

Centres to review the new
M.Phil/Ph.D guidelines which was chaired by VC, PU Prof. Arun Kumar Grover. As per the
suggestion of Panjab University Vice Chancellor, DUI had convened a meeting of all
Chairpersons/Directors/Coordinators of PU teaching departments/Institutes/Centres to
review the new M.Phil/Ph.D. guidelines.  Meeting was attended by VC, PU.
DUI, PU Prof. Meenakshi Malhotra informed that it was discussed that  SC/ST candidates
having National Scholarships such as UGC(JRF), RGNF/Maulana Azad National Scholarship
etc. or any other scholarship of Government of India ought not be denied admission
particularly in M.Phil/Ph.D. program in order to give them adequate representation at
Panjab University. SC/ST candidates who may not fall in the merit list prepared by the
departments/Centres/Institutes for admission to M.Phil/Ph.D. Programmes, special slots
may be created for such scholarship holders by the respective departments. To start
with, wherever necessary, the faculty members may be given one extra candidate for
supervision in addition to the stipulated number of candidates, later on the number
exceeding the stipulated limit would get reduced as per norms.
It was also discussed that candidates having M.Phil degree from Panjab University may
be exempted from Ph.D. Entrance Test, but such candidates would have to qualify the
interview.  A Weightage of 10% marks may be given to M.Phil candidates as well as
candidates having National Fellowships like JRF, Inspire fellowship, Rajiv Gandhi
Fellowship etc. There should not be any cut-off point / elimination of students on the
basis of marks obtained during the interaction, for admission to M.Phil/Ph.D.
programmes. The sum total of marks determined for academic record and those during the
interaction may be considered for preparing merit list(s) for admission to M.Phil /
Dean of University Instruction apprised that all the admissions made to M.Phil/Ph.D.
Programme prior to the issuance of the circular No7363-7462/DUI/DS dated 26.09.2017
shall not be affected. However, if the departments are having vacant seats for
M.Phil/Ph.D. Programme, admission to these seats may be processed as per the new

Skill Development Courses Completed at UIET Panjab University Chandigarh
        University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University
Chandigarh is successfully running skill development courses with the support of
Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh under EST & P component of Deendayal Antyodaya
Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).  Dr. Amrinder Pal Singh,
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering that the courses are being run in the
Mechanical Engineering Department of UIET in the evening to facilitate the working
candidates in learning new skills for better job opportunities.
Under this program, two courses namely Computer Fundamentals with MS-Office,
Networking, Accounting with Tally & Soft Skill Training and Refrigeration and Air-
Conditioning was completed on 11/10/2017 with final evaluation by external examiners.
45 students in Computer Fundamentals course and 35 students in Refrigeration and Air
conditioning course completed their training.
The students are given an opportunity to learn in theory classes, acquire practical
skills with hands-on training in lab sessions and industrial visits. The students also
learn Ethics, Social values, Communication Skills and Basic Life Skills covering
various topics i.e. Savings, Accounts, Health & Life Insurance, Civic sense, respect to
women, Directive Principles of State Policy, Indian Culture and values, Public Health
etc. The successful students will be issued the Certificates collectively from UIET,
Panjab University and DAY-NULM Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.
        He further informed that no fee is being charged for these courses to
facilitate underprivileged sections of society. The students enrolled belong to the low
income group families of Chandigarh. The purpose of the program is to provide the youth
with knowledge and skills which enable them to stand on their feet and earn livelihood
for them as well as for their families. The students after completing the course have
the opportunity to join a job or start small skill based business of their own. The
Government also supports the students for loans to start their business through its
various schemes.

Enactus Team SSBUICET, Panjab University organized annual diya painting competition
SWAROOP was conducted across various schools in and around Chandigarh, here today. The
competition provides a platform to young students to showcase their creativity and at
the same time work for a social cause. The team’s primary motive was to bring out
consciousness of students towards various social issues which are being targeted by the
Enactus team, informed Prof. Seema Kapoor, Faculty Advisor, ENACTUS team.
The competition held in Sacred Heart School, Sector-26, Chandigarh. The team got an
enthusiastic response with more than 371 entries. The students were divided into three
categories from 3rd to 10th class. All the students were provided with diyas from the
Enactus team, told Sheryl Sarna, Vice President of Enactus team. The team was
appreciated for its concerted efforts for the betterment of society and the social
cause by the school teachers and the principal, SisterNisha.
The event was also organised in Ankur Nursery School, Sector-14, Chandigarh. It
received participation from over 205 students who thoroughly enjoyed this activity. In
the spirit of Enactus all the kids were also made aware about the problems of
underprivileged communities. The team plans to conduct it in several more schools
around Chandigarh and is affirmative to receive a good response from all. Dr.Parminder
Duggal, Principal of the school acknowledged the student’s efforts and zeal.
The top three best performers from each category in a school are being awarded with a
certificate and a token of appreciation. From Sacred Heart School, the ten winners from
three categories were Devanshi Arora, Pranitib, Muskaan, Shambhavi, Sanya Gupta, Ridhi
Garg, Parzaa, Puresima, Ojasvini and Harshita. The Enactus team has further planned to
celebrate Diwali with the residents of Senior Citizen Home in Sector -15, Chandigarh by
organising various cultural and fun filled activities, said Taranpreet Singh, President
of Enactus team.
