University, Chandigarh on  December 19, 2017 at  3.30  p.m. The lecture will be
delivered by Advocate Ajay Jagga and  CA Keshav R. Garg.   Dr. A.K. Saihjpal will
preside over the Lecture.

Phramaha Boonyod Tonkanya on the theme “Buddhist way of Meditation” on 19th December,
2017 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm in Guru Tegh Bahadur Bhawan, First Floor, Interdisciplinary

“International Workshop on Population Health Promotion:
An International Perspective “

One-week international workshop on Population Health Promotion: An International
Perspective started today at Panjab University under Global Initiative of Academic
Networks (GiAN). The workshop is jointly being organised by Centre for Public Health,
Panjab University and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Professor B.S. Ghuman, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala was the Chief Guest
of the workshop. During his inaugural speech he emphasised that there is a need to
increase spending in area of public health in equitable manner and to use country
population as an asset rather than a liability. He also spoke that there is need to
focus on health policies and compliance of health services to reach all section of the

Professor Arun Kumar Grover Vice Chancellor, Panjab University urged that an
interdisciplinary approach including physicians, environmentalists, sports,
managements, economists etc is needed for the upliftment of public and population
health in India.  He also stressed to use modern technology including information
technology to promote the public health in India. He further emphasized the unique
opportunity this program GiAN can offer to multi-university engagement and can have a
cascading impact to enhance research quality in the country.

Dr. Shanthi Johnson, Professor,  University of Regina, Canada is the guest faculty in
the workshop including local faculty Dr. Suman Mor, Coordinator, Central for Public
Health and Dr Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor, School of Public Health, PGIMER,

The GiAN workshop will focus on population health promotion and the determinants of
health having special  focus on theoretical and methodological approaches with
practical applications.  The workshop will challenge the participants to develop
critical interpretive skills to develop, implement, and evaluate locally driven health
promotion strategies to address critical health and social issues.  In addition, the
focus will also extend to knowledge translation skills to reach a wider audience.
Further, the role of population health interventions in addressing health disparities
will be examined from the stage of conception to evaluation. Important components such
as community-engagement, partnership, policy and advocacy will also be highlighted.

Dr. S.K. Metha, Local Coordinator GiAN highlighted the contribution of Panjab
University in tapping the talent pool of scientists, researchers and exchange of
scientific thoughts through collaborations, internationally to encourage their
engagement with the institutes of Higher Education in India through GiAN.

Dr Suman Mor, Coordinator of the workshop  highlighted that current workshop will
strengthen the capacity of the public health professionals so that they can better
design social and environmental intervention to benefit and protect individual health
including improvement in quality of life.

Dr Ravindra Khaiwal, highlighted that we need to focus on environmental determinants of
health and if not paid proper attention, they may lead to increase burden of disease
and mortality such as we are seeing increasing adverse impact of air pollution.

Professor Ramanjit Kaur Johal, Director Research Promotion Cell, highlighted that
Panjab University is taking lead to organise such training courses to engage researcher
for the benefit of the society.

Over 45 participants which includes Health professionals, Researchers, Scientists,
Faculty members, students and other stakeholder organizations engaged in field of
public health are attending the training programme for the duration of 7 days.
