Special Lecture on Memory at PU

        The ICSSR North-Western Regional Centre  in collaboration with the Department
of Psychology, Panjab University and LM Thapar School of Management, Punjab, organized
a  special lecture on  “Frontier Areas of Memory Research: Working Memory Across the
Adult Life Span” by Dr. Robert H. Logie, Professor of Human Cognitive Neuroscience,
University of  Edinburg, U.K.

        Dr. Logie, in his opening remarks  talked about t the memory structure.    He
said that debate drives  science.  Debate can self perpetuate without advancing
knowledge.  He spoke  about the different approaches to understanding working memory
and described a current project which has thrown a new light on working memory
capacity and  processing.

        Professor Meenakshi Malhotra, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab
University, in
her presidential remarks, emphasized that human memory expresses itself  in our
ability to retain things.  In the present times, one needs to retain numerous things
at a time and not only that,  one also needs to retain things for short and long
spans  of time alongwith carrying out various actions in daily life.  Working memory
is indeed an  area of  interest due to its utility to human beings.


        The lecture was followed by a lively discussion  in which faculty from
different
disciplines and  scholars  participated.

Health Check Up Camp at Boys Hostel No. 5 of PU

        Centre for Public Health, Panjab University, Chandigarh as community outreach
programme, organised health check up camp for the Mess and Canteen Workers of Lala Laj
Pat Rai Boys hostel no 5. The Camp included the health talk by the Dr. Naveen Kumar  on
the issue of personal hygiene, cleanliness, hand-washing technique and best practices
to maintain hygiene in kitchen area followed by the health check up camp of the workers
of  Boys Hostel No. 5.

        The camp was inaugurated by Professor Emaual Nahar Dean Student Welfare.
Professor Nahar while addressing the mess and canteen workers highlighted the need to
keep the kitchen and residential area neat and clean. It covered all dimensions like
how to wash vegetables, how to cut vegetables, how to cook under hygienic conditions
and how to keep cleanliness.
        The Coordinator of the Health Camp, Dr. Suman Mor apprised that in this series
this is the fifth hostel of the Panjab University where such health camp has been
organized.      Keeping in view the fact that health of workers is equally important
and awareness on hygiene and cleaneliness.
        During interaction with workers some of workers were identified and given the
chance to show their talents in front of all and hence were motivated.
Hostel warden Dr. Parveen Kumar shared that over thirty-five workers are benefitted by
this camp. Mess and Canteen workers  showed enthusiasm and got their health check up
done.

        Workers were also informed about various health insurance which they can avail
and get benefitted

Expert talk  on ‘GATE 2018 at UIET, PU

        Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, University Institute
of Engineering & Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh  organized an expert talk
on ‘GATE 2018: Time Management During Exam’.
        Mr. Tarun Garg, Managing Director, GATE Revolution, in his address to the
students  appearing in Electronics and Communication Engineering, GATE 2018 focused on
the importance of execution over preparation by giving important tips in solving the
paper. He insisted on having a positive thought process. He motivated students by
sharing some motivating stories. He took the queries of individual student and helped
them clarify the doubts. It was an interactive and encouraging session.
        Students of 8th semester B.E (ECE) and 2nd Semester M.E. (ECE) attended the
lecture.

        Dr. Prashant Jindal, Assistant Professor, University Institute of Engineering &
Technology(UIET), Panjab University(PU), Chandigarh has been awarded Commonwealth
Rutherford post doctoral research fellowship 2017-18 in the area of additive
manufacturing for medical implants, to work at Nottingham Trent University (NTU),
United Kingdom for a period of one year.
        He is working in the mechanical engineering department and is also the
Principal Investigator of medical devices project under the Design Innovation Centre
(DIC) program. His core team comprising of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering
faculty and students have been extensively working on assisting restorative surgeries
related to maxillofacial and craniofacial defects using software modelingand 3D
printing. These technologies in future will be very useful in providing a low cost
solution for reconstruction and restoration of damaged skull and facial structures with
high precision.
        Through this fellowship, NTU and UIET will further work on
restorativetechnologies to achieve DIC objectives. Dr Jindal has several high impact
publications and International conference presentations to his name.
