Chandigarh, Feb 17 -    Haryana State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with Haryana Education Department today organized 8th Annual Function of Students Legal Literacy Mission at Kurukshetra.  This mission is conceived with an object of preparing the next generation for challenges of tomorrow. 

            This view was shared by Mr. Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana and Executive Chairman, Haryana State Legal Services Authority who was chief guest on this occasion. Mr. Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana and Administrative Judge, Kurukshetra Sessions Division was also present being the special guest.

            Haryana State Legal Services Authority has already opened 6618 Students legal literacy clubs in the different schools and colleges across the State of Haryana. In these clubs students are sensitized on social legal issues, rights and duties under the law through interactive methods like theatre and arts such as skits, spot paintings, declamations, poetry recitation, Power point presentation etc. Throughout the year, the competitions in various categories are also organized by the Department of Education and the winners are felicitated in this function.

                        In his keynote address, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal conveyed that Legal literacy is the basic core of the rule of law and is essential in its understanding for the survival of constitutional democracy.  Lack of legal awareness in society is mainly responsible for exploitation and unlawful deprivation of basic rights and social benefits. Many problems like child labour, human trafficking, child abduction, domestic violence and child marriage etc. are prevalent in the society. To create awareness and to sensitize the people about these problems, Haryana State Legal Services Authority took this initiative to spread/support Students Legal Literacy Programme. Bytaking clue from Haryana, National Legal Services Authority has requested the other State Legal Services Authorities across the nation to start Legal Literacy Clubs in the educational institutions in their respective States. He also informed that in the month of November, 2017 District Legal Services Authority, Narnaul was adjudged as the best District Legal Service Authority in the nation.

                        Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Judge, High Court of Punjab & Haryana, Administrative Judge, Kurukshetra Sessions Division acknowledged the efforts of Haryana State Legal Services Authority to make Students Legal Literacy Mission a success.

            Ms. Jyoti Arora, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education and Ms. Dheera Khandelwal, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of School Education congratulated the winners. They also appreciated the work and labour put in by the students and all others who participated in this event.

                        Sh. Puneesh Jindia, Member Secretary, Haryana State Legal Services Authority, Ms. Shalini Singh Nagpal, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson, District Legal Services Authority, Kurukshetra along with other Judicial Officers, Ms. Sumedha Katari a Deputy Commissioner, Kurukshetra, Sh. Abhishek Garg, Superintendent of Police, Kurukshetra along with other Administrative Officers of the District Kurukshetra, teachers and children from various schools and colleges of State of Haryana were also present during the function.
