Chandigarh,10.04.18-National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated on the theme ‘Respectful Maternity Care’ in Civil Hospital, Sector 45, Chandigarh in collaboration with Chandigarh Administration and Department of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, PGIMER. About 50 health service providers involved in providing maternal health care services including obstetrician, doctors, nurses, ANMs, LHV, and hospital attendants were sensitized regarding ‘Respectful Maternity Care’. Dr. Madhu  Gupta, Additional Professor of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, PGIMER, explained that Respectful Maternal Care had seven components of care including, abuse free care, consented care, confidential care, dignified care, discrimination free care, non-abandonment and non-denial of care, and non-detention in the facilities. She told that it was the right of pregnant women to receive respectful maternity care in the health facilities and to have a birth companion during labour. She presented the findings of the study done by School of Public Health on ‘Respectful Maternity Care’ in Northern states, which showed that pregnant women availing government health facilities experience more disrespect and abuse than private health facilities.

Dr Krishna Chaudhary, Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, Sector 45, emphasized on the need of confidentiality and privacy of the pregnant women during the process of labour and delivery and urged the staff to give proper respect and regard to the pregnant women during their stay at the health facility, and make this hospital a model hospital where every patient is treated with respect and dignity. The session was organized by Dr Bashar, Senior Resident, PGIMER, Dr Suchi, Junior Resident and Mr. Chering Bhag, Medical Social Worker, PGIMER, Chandigarh.
