International Conference on “Translational research on life sciences” an event under CRIKC

The second day of International workshop, under the aegis of CRIKC, in association with Stanford University, USA started quite ceremoniously today at Panjab University, on the theme “Transitional research on life sciences”.

The first session of second day of international conference was chaired by Professor Praveen Rishi from Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof. Indu verma from PGIMER, Chandigarh gave a interesting lecture on the topic entitled “Improving Upon BCG Vaccine: Exploiting the Mycobacterial RD Antigens”. After that, Principal Scientist Dr. Deepak Sharma from CSIR-IMTECH, Chandigarh delivered a lecture on role of Hsp 70s in protecting cells from protein inclusion toxicity. Dr. Sudhir Sharma from Panacea Biotech, Mohali also contributed to this conference by giving his interesting talk on Aim for Vaccines. How Vaccines were useful in past. How the vaccines are helping in present and how they will be helpful in future.

The next session of second day conference was chaired by Prof. R. K. Sinha, Director, CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organization, Chandigarh. Prof. Savita Sharma from UIET department, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered a lecture on Applications of imaging and analytics in medical diagnosis at UIET. She also explained the problems with normal ultrasound imaging because of speckle occurance and described speckle filtering methods for speckle free ultrasound test imaging. The next talk was given by Prof. Manni Luthra-Guptasarma from PGIMER, Chandigarh. She delivered a talk on novel methods for cellular programming and the applications of these methods for the regeneration of cornea like tissues. Subsequently, Prof. Meenu Singh, Prof. of Pediatrics from PGIMER, Chandigarh gave a talk on Precision medicine in pediatric respiratory diseases. She delivered a talk on topic entitled “Precision Medicine: Every child is different”. She discussed about Pharmacogenomics i.e. how genes affect a person’s response to different drugs.

Prof. B. S. Bhoop from the department of University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, Chandigarh chaired the post lunch session of the conference. Prof. Rupinder Tewari (Coordinator, DST-CPR, PU) explained about the need of Industry-Academia platform whereas Prof. Indu Pal Kaur (UIPS, PU Chd) delivered a valuable talk on the topic entitled “Industry-Academic research partenerships: Balancing Act”. “Let’s talk Incubation” was the interesting talk delivered by Dr. Rohit Sharma (Head, Bioincubator Facility at PU Campus & Chairperson, Microbial Biotechnology, PU Chd) who briefed about the several opportunities available from Govt. of India through BIRAC, BioNEST PU for budding scientists to work on new ideas. He also declared that there is call from the BioNEST-PU for Secondary Agriculture Entrepreneurial Network under BioNEST-PU which will fund five projects to innovators or Startups @Rs 50lakhs to each. This is first of its kind in India. He also declared two seed funds @Rs 1 Lkah for two innovators under CSR-FKOL fund. To summarize, Prof. Bhoop mentioned that the “CUTS” (Confidentiality, Understanding, Trust, and Speed) need to be taken care for the translational research.

The second day of the conference was concluded after a poster session where 50 participants presented their research activities.

After threadbare deliberations with all the Heads of the examination branches, which are under the control of the Controller of Examinations, Panjab University, Chandigarh is implementing Examination Charter on 6.7.2018 from the coming academic session onwards for the redressal of examination related grievances. Efficient and Transparent Governance is need of the hour. Examination Charter would provide a quick grievance redressal mechanism to the students.

It has been constant and consistent efforts of the C.O.E. office to bring improvements/reforms to mitigate the difficulties being faced, still much more yet to be done, whereas this initiative will definitely speed up the mechanism of redressal of grievances of our students.

Workshop organised by Centre for Social Work, PU

A workshop on Implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 was conducted at Golden Jubliee Hall, Panjab University which was organised here today by Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of Haryana in partnership with Centre for Social Work, Panjab University Chandigarh.

The objective of the workshop was to garner views and suggestions across a spectrum of stakeholders from the State Government, NGO sector, and from the academia to the differently abled themselves. This, in order to ensure that policy and guidelines reflect and address the mandate of the RPWD Act, 2016 and the concerns of the differently abled.

Sh Krishan Kumar Bedi, Hon'ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of Haryana graced the occasion and addressed the participants. Hon'ble Minister, Social Justice & Empowerment stated the budget of the department had been increased to Rs. 6077 crore. He said that the department would work specifically for compliance of the provisions of the RPWD Act and ensure that these become effective expeditiously.

Eminent personalities were invited to discuss various aspects of the RPwD Act such as legal, education, employment and health which included Prof Navleen Kaur, Dr Aditya Kaushik, Sh. Pankaj Jain (Sr. Counsel, Hon'ble Punjab and Haryana High Court).

Smt. Neerja Shekhar, Principal Secretary, Haryana Government, presented a comprehensive introduction of objectives of the workshop and policies regarding PwDs.

Sh. Dinesh Shastri, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Haryana discussed the issues and challenges that differently abled persons come across and possible solutions that are provided through the RPwD act, 2016.

Sh. KVS Rao, Director, DEPwD, MSJE, Govt of India, New Delhi enlightened the participants about accessibility and inclusiveness under the RPwD Act, 2016.

Differently abled participants also shared their experiences and gave suggestions to make the implementation of the provisions of the Act prompt and effective.

The workshop succeeded in bringing together views from a cross-section of society and bringing forth the roles and responsibilities of the Government and of different stakeholders.
