Valedictory Function of 119th Orientation Course organized at PU

The valedictory function of 119th Orientation Course, organized by the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh was held on 13thAugust, 2018. The chief guest Professor Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University graced the occasion and distributed certificates to 36 participants, teachers from Colleges and Universities of 7 States and Union Territories who attended the programme. The four weeks programme aimed at sensitizing the participants to contemporary significance and developing skills of effective pedagogy.

Prof. Raj Kumar emphasized the critical need to link the higher education system with the other stake holders of the civil society. Referring to the need to augment the resources in the university system, he called for greater interface between the academia and the corporate sector. Under the corporate social responsibility funds, the corporate sector of late has been generously contributing to the higher education sector and therefore the university centres/ departments must try their best to avail the emerging opportunities. He said that if teachers/centres have good action plan/ competent proposal then there is no dearth of funds for them in the corporate sector. Talking of the need to create a seamless web, Prof. Kumar also underlined the need to prepare an action plan to link the University to colleges as well as schools in the neighbourhood so that all the three levels of education strata can cohere and contribute to each others domain. Vice chancellor also advised the HRDC faculty to create innovative sessions in future that can enable the participant teachers to do think creatively/ rather than subjecting them only through scholarly presentations in the orientation and refresher courses.

He expressed his happiness to get the opportunity to meet with the faculty of different educational institutes from all over India. He said it was very dear to him to speak to his colleagues and it was a touching moment for him. He finally urged the participant teachers to be good in their subject domain and also help and support the students and contribute to economic, social and cultural development of our great nation.

Professor Ashutosh Kumar, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his maiden visit and expected that the centre would continue to receive his guidance and encouragement.

Lecture on Adolescence and Menstrual Hygiene held at PU

Students of Centre for Public Health, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered a lecture on Adolescence and Menstrual Hygiene in Ankur School, Panjab University. Female students of class 5th to 10th were taught about adolescence and the Hygeine practices to be followed to maintain a good health. The lecture focused on proper disposal of sanitary pads and maintaining personal hygiene. Queries of students were also addressed.

Dr. Mrs. Parminder Duggal, Principal of Ankur School welcomed the step of Centre for Public Health. She added education of students on these two important issue is really required and it was an attempt to give them platform to have discussion on these issues.

PU students attend Summer School in Nottingham Trent University, UK

17 students represented Panjab University (PU) at the Summer School program hosted by the Nottingham Trent University, UK. The students were from three departments of the university i.e. University Institute of Legal Studies, University Institute of Applied Management Sciences and the Center for Human Rights and Duties. The students interacted with the Vice Chancellor and shared their experiences through presentations before a committee of faculty comprising Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean International Students (DIS), Dr. Namita, Prof. Swarnjit, Dr. Monica and Dr. Shruti Bedi. The courses attended by the students were on International Human Rights, Society and People in Crisis and Transformational Role of Leadership in Society.

The course on International Human Rights covered different aspects of the rights and violations in the world. The Society and People in Crisis course dealt with aspects of criminology and the psychology of criminals and people. The Leadership course benefitted the students immensely as it taught them different connotations of leading in crisis situations.
The students who have recently returned from an extremely successful trip were happy about their experience and the knowledge that they gained from this exchange. The Nottingham Trent University is one of the prime universities which offers many such programs to the students and faculty of PU and vice versa. The DIS office in PU is constantly engaged in the facilitation of such programs.

The resource person for the evening was Dr Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson, University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development Panjab University Chandigarh (UIFT & VD) speaking about the "Art of Indian Textiles". Dr. Prabhdip Brar took the audience through an eclectic journey of the textile industry. Slides depicting the myriad hues of fabrics added color to the talk. Students discussed the possibility of working together in projects making art history and fashion as a medium.

Dr. Brar enlisted the various career opportunities for students of art history.

Lecture on “Career Prospects in Archaeology” held at PU

The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, Panjab University, Chandigarh has organized a special lecture on “Career Prospects in Archaeology” by Dr. Banani Bhattacharyya, Deputy Director, Department of Archaeology & Museums, Haryana (Chandigarh), here today. The speaker interacted with the students of the department and apprised them of the career prospects after completing the course in the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology. Today’s lecture marked the end of one week orientation programme for the new students who have joined the department.


Celebration of Teej Festival at Mata Gujri Hall- Girls Hostel -1

Residents of Mata Gujri Hall- Girls Hostel -1, Panjab University, Chandigarh Celebrated Teej Festival with full zeal and enthusiasm.

Prof Neena Kaplash, DSW (W), Panjab University presided over the Teej function. The lighting of lamp was done by Prof. Neena Kapalash, Prof. E. Mannual Nahar, Dr. Kuljeet Kaur, Dr. Kavita Taneja, Dr. Veenu Mor . Wardens Dr Namita Gupta, Dr Kawalpreet kaur and Dr Ravneet Kaur also graced the occasion.

Teej Committee comprising of Ms. Akshi, Preety, Jasleen, Agampreet, Navjot, Haramrit and Mandeep made all arrangements for Teej function.

Residents took part in Mehandi and Rangoli competitions. Dr. Kuljeet Kaur, Dr. Kavita Tanjea and Dr. Veenu Mor were the judges for the same. Ms. Sarabjeet and Mandeep declared first and second winner in Mehandi competition whereas Ms. Priya & Akshita were declared first in Rangoli competition. The residents presented various folk dances like Ghoomer, Ladakhi, Punjabi Gidha etc.

All the winners were awarded with prizes. The function ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Suman Mor, Warden GH-1.
