(UCIM), Panjab University is running a M.Sc. (Instrumentation) Course.
In M.Sc.(Instrumentation) Course, 16 seats are vacant for filling up from
amongst the eligible candidates, as per the University Handbook of Information 2018-
2019 available at http://puchd.ac.in. The candidate thus desirous of taking up the
vacant seats may apply on the admission form available in the department

Admission to M.Sc. (Instrumentation) will be made on merit basis. The seats

Talk on “Role of Biology in Engineering and Computer Science” held at PU

An invited talk under the aegis of TEQIP-III was organised here today at
Department of Biotechnology, University Institute of Engineering and Technology(UIET),
Panjab University, Chandigarh. Prof A.S. Ahluwalia, Professor, Department of Botany,
Panjab University delivered the talk on “Role of Biology in Engineering and Computer
Science” emphasising the fact that narrow areas of research are crisscrossed by
several other disciplines leading to a multi disciplinary research scenario today. The
session was attended by students and faculty of Biotechnology, UIET. Students were
highly motivated by the talk which opened their young minds towards brilliant ideas.

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme

Under Swachh Bharat Summer Internship programme, a team of students completed
100 hour under the supervision of Dr. Suman Mor, Department of Environment Studies
Panjab University, Chandigarh. Team comprises of team leader Ashpreet Kaur and team
members Yogita and Anchita Thakur from Dept of Environment Studies, Sukhman Singh,
Sharndeep, Yendrembam Binand Singh, Department of Evening Studies, Rajan Kumar Library
and Information Science.
The team adopted village Kaimbwala to meet the objective of this training
programme and for raising awareness about waste segregation, waste management, health
and hygiene. The team visited the adopted village and surveyed the area. Members also
interacted with the Sarpanch and residents of village and made an attempt to
understand the local environment issues so that same can be addressed during this
programme. With the support of UT Forest department, team members distributed 100
plants including tulsi, amla, aloe-vera etc to the residents and sensitised them about
benefits of growing plants. Further, With the help of Sarpanch of the area, the
street sweepers and waste handler working in the area were provided with personal
protective things like gloves, masks etc and were sensitised that why it is important
to use them while working. Two bins system was also introduced into the villages and
dustbin were installed at various place with the help of Sarpanch. Residents were also
made aware about use of these bins and benefit of segregation of waste. Fun game were
also organized in which school children participated and learned about waste
segregation. Balls were made out of waste paper on which name of a waste item was
mentioned. This enhanced the learning process as well as participation of children was
great.
With school children events like cleanliness drives, plantation drives, best
out of waste competition, organic rangoli competition, fun way to learn waste
segregation, solid waste segregation demonstrations were carried out. Painting event
with the support of school fine arts teacher Mr. Tulsi Ram was also conducted.
Lecture on proper disposal of diapers and sanitary pads, malaria and dengue,
importance of 3R’s- reduce, reuse, recycle were conducted. Demonstrations on hand
washing techniques, and making detergents and cleaning agents at home by using eco-
enzymes were also done.
Dr. Suman Mor apprised that the team has worked very hard and was able to
meet the objective. Residents and Sarpanch of area appreciated the efforts put up by

Plantation Drive at PU
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University(PU), Chandigarh since
assuming the charge of his office has shown keen interest in enhancing the greenery in
the Panjab University Campus. Under the kind patronage of the Vice Chancellor, the
Horticulture Division of Panjab University has organised various plantations drives
and has plans to organize many more in the near future.
Plantation drive was organised at the Department of Arts History & Visual
Arts, Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Gandhian and Peace Studies
wherein more than 150 plants of the variety Ficus, Bottlebrush, Kachnar, Chandani &
Dracena were planted. Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, Sr. Prof. M.L.
Sharma, Dr. Tirthankar Bhattacharya, Chairperson, Deptt. of Arts History & Visual
Arts, Dr. Ashu Pasricha, Chairperson, Deptt. of Gandhian and Peace Studies & Dr. Renu
Thakur, Chairperson, Deptt. of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology graced
the occasion and also planted sapling.
In the plantation drive, more than 100 students from the University
participated with great enthusiasm and also adopted the plants showing their
commitment towards environment protection. Students of 1st year of the participating
departments in particular were the most enthusiastic and were feeling proud to be a
part of the University which has set an example in greenery for the residents of
Chandigarh and other institutions of the tricity. Ms. Gagandeep Kaur, a blind student
of 1st year of Deptt. of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology also
participated in the plantation drive setting an example for other students to emulate.
Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare on this occasion appreciated the
faculty and students for being a part of this initiative and expressed hope that their
constant support will continue in future as well.
Er. Anil Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Hort.) expressed his gratitude towards
the Vice Chancellor for being an inspiration for the staff and students to take this
initiative and proposed vote of thanks. He also apprised about the future plans of
plantation drive to be organised by the Horticulture Department.
