Lecture delivered on Study of Religion

Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a
lecture, here today. Dr. Gurmeet Singh Head, Department of Guru Gobind Singh Religious
Study Punjabi University Patiala expressed that Religion is becoming an effective force
in the contemporary society. Modern theories are insufficient to understand the
religious phenomena presently; however singular views and large claims on the religion
create clashes and conflicts.
Professor Jaspal Kaur Kaang introduced the speaker to the Students and Research
Scholars of the Department and welcomed him. She explained that these lectures are
being organized specially for the students who are doing Post Graduate study in the
Department on Comparative Study of Religion. She also said that the objective of these
invited lectures is to impart deep understanding of the study of Religion in students
and research scholars and stated that the main topics of today’s lectures were,
different Approaches to understand the study of Religion; Evolutionary, Sociological,
Psychological and phonological approaches which were discussed in detail by the
scholar. Dr. Kaang also explained that there is great need to understand the study of
religion with applying the interdisciplinary insights.
The Lectures were delivered under the series of Special lecture of Department. At the
end of the lectures various questions were answered by Dr. Gurmeet Singh.

A sensitization/awareness workshop on sexual harassment Organized
Panjab University Committee Against Sexual Harassment (PUCASH) in collaboration

with the Department cum Centre for Women's Studies and Development and Dean Student
Welfare (DSW) office organised a sensitization/awareness workshop on sexual harassment
in the building of emerging areas in Panjab University, here today.
This was the first of a series of workshops planned for this session by PUCASH.
The convenor Dr. Ameer Sultana welcoming the participants stated that workshops would
be convened every week alternating between Sector 14 and 25 Campuses in order to cover
all departments of Panjab University, including the students, teaching, non-teaching,
security personnel as well as other workers on the Campus.
Stating that the key word in sexual harassment is ‘Unwelcome’ Prof. Manvinder
Kaur, chairperson of PUCASH gave a short presentation highlighting the key features of
the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act 2013. The participants were informed about the
various forms of sexual harassment, who is an aggrieved woman, what is the workplace,
who can complain as well as how and where to complain. She also explained about various
behaviours which were not covered under sexual harassment at work place like work
absence, work performance, meeting deadlines, constructive feedback, conditions of work
and normal exercise of management rights. Details regarding prevention and prohibition
were also explained.
Prof Neena Caplash, DSW further elaborated that one needs to be careful while
filing a complaint because false and malicious complaints can be problematic for the
person filing a complaint.
The presentation was followed by an intense discussion among the participants
who among other things sought to know whether boys are also covered under the Act.
The workshop was attended by over 80 participants form the Departments of
Women's Studies, Human Rights, and Police Administration. Also present on the occasion
was Ms. Kanupriya, President, PUCSC.

STARTUPS AIM FOR AN INTERNATIONAL CORRIDOR:

Over 17 Startup Ideas from Pan India came and presented at the pre finals of
the Bootcamp for Ingenuity 2018, a global innovators competition. The event started
with an inaugural speech given by Dr. M M Gupta founding member of CRIKC (Chandigarh
Region Innovation and knowledge cluster) who motivated the startups on how the Indian
entrepreneurial mentors lobby can help them reach their goals.

The Mentor cum Jury panel comprised Dr Deepti Gupta-Dean International students Punjab
University. Dr. Archana Mantri Pro-Vice Chancellor Chitkara University, Rajpura. Mr.
Sumeer Walia Director-CEED and Dr. Meenu Gupta Department of English, Panjab
University. Startups from Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Himachal, Amritsar, Rajpura,
Banur, Pinjore region pitched for 5 minutes each followed by Q&A.

The shortlisted startups will compete in the Global finals at Nottingham University,
Ningbo China in December 2018. The finals will witness investors from China, India and
the UK along with 10 Startups each from these three nations. The goal of this global
battle of business ideas is to pave the way for an international business corridor
among these three nations and increase the scope to scale.

Following is the list of Startups, those who pitched their Ideas at the Punjab
University English Auditorium on 16th October 2018.

Anukai- AI based traffic management system to help manage better traffic routes in city
based on traffic in city.

Docs In Blocks- Provide security to personal documents through block chain already
working in collaboration with Telangana University.

Xovian- it is an aerospace startup with a vision to provide sustainable solutions in
satellite technologies including satellite parts and satellite sub stations.

Sickle Innovations- Hardware Automation in fruit plucking industry to save time and
maintain quality of fruits at the same time, the startup is from Ahmedabad and is doing
roaring sales in Himachal Pradesh.

Sea Cup- “Making transportation easier” launching a responsive e-bike that has an
international market and targets premium customers.

AgVisi Solution- “Sustainable Farms and Future” helping the the farmer to get maximum
share for their productivity through centralized vegetable and fruits distribution
system.


Cialfor BlockChain Solution- It is a platform for hospitals and patience’s to store
their medical record. The information can be accessed securely whenever and wherever
you need.

Moksh- The team has created an Innovative machine that helps to dispose crop waste by
converting into dry powder in the form of activated charcoal thereby helping farmers
economically and saving time simultaneously.

BBOOrja- A clean technology preventing sable burning with smoke less “chulla”
technology using agriculture waste.

Aiotize – It is an IOT based solution company which is developing face recognition
system for better security. A startup in AI field.

Paperless Erasable E-braille Slate- The focus is on blind kids where they intend to
create a braille slate to reduce paper use and build a stronger education alternative
for blind students/people.

QS India University Rankings 2019
PU MBA Ranks No. 15 in Asia

The first-ever QS University Rankings 2019 published a separate ranking of the
top Higher Education Institutions in India.
According to Indian Universities Act, 1904 which applies to first 5 Universities
including Calcutta, Mumbai , Madras , PU Lahore and Allahabad , only three have
figured in this list of QS Indian University Rankings 2019. PU is ranked 3rd after
University of Calcutta and Mumbai.

In QS Indian University Rankings 2019, PU is placed at Rank 49 in overall ranking
list. PU stands number 15 in Full-time MBA Rankings in Asia. The break-up of PU scores
on various parameters was as follows :-

ACADEMIC REPUTATION: PU was placed at #19.

EMPLOYER REPUTATION : PU was placed at #42

PAPERS PER FACULTY : PU was placed at #48

CITATIONS PER PAPER: PU was placed at #35

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: PU ranked #42

In the above rankings, 80 institutions of India have been included and 75 ranks have
been declared

All Universities have their unique strengths and get different scores as per different
criteria’s and parameters. But, it is a matter of satisfaction that PU is consistently
being ranked among the top universities of the country by different rankings informed
PU Spokesperson added.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar has expressed satisfaction that despite various
challenges, the University has been able to get its position in the QS rankings and
congratulated the students, research scholars, teachers and staff. He added that all
steps are being taken for taking University to still newer heights.

a Certificate Distribution ceremony

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development
(UIFT & VD), Panjab University (PU), organised a Certificate Distribution ceremony
today to felicitate its students of BSc Semester-I (Fashion & Lifestyle Technology) for
their contribution to a Cleanliness Drive in its premises.
More than thirty students participated in the exercise, along with research
scholars who carried out the drive in the department under Swachhta Hi Seva Abhiyan (a
flagship program of Government of India from September15th to October 2nd 2018). The
certificates were awarded by Naunihal Singh, IGP, Jalandhar Range (Punjab Police). The
students shared how this activity changed their attitude towards the subject of hygiene
and cleanliness. The campaign took place under the guidance of Dr. Prabhdip Brar,
Chairperson, UIFT, PU who appreciated students for their voluntary effort.

"Pharmacists for a Healthy India"
IPA - Devinder Pal - National Elocution Competition – 2018

On behalf of Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Panjab University Pharmaceutical
Society (PUPS) organised IPA - Devinder Pal - National Elocution Competition – 2018 at
University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University Chandigarh. The
theme of the elocution was "Pharmacists for a Healthy India".
Out of the participants from B. Pharm and M. Pharm classes, the winners were Jagriti
Sharma (First), Preetika Gupta (second) and Bakul Tikoo (third). The winners were
awarded with a certificate and cash prizes. The winner Jagriti Sharma mainly emphasized
on the healthcare system of India and how a pharmacist can serve as a crucial link that
connects the diverse masses of this billion plus population. She concluded her speech
with the note that Brain Drain is a major setback for India as the education gained by
our pharmacists is exploited in terms of services to other nations.
In the valedictory function, Professor Kanwaljit Chopra, Chairperson, UIPS emphasized
on the role of Pharmacist in Health care system in India. Dr Neelima Dhingra and Dr Jai
Malik were the expert evaluator. The event was organised by Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Dr
Anurag Kuhad and Dr Sangeeta P. Sah. Professor Indu Pal Kaur informed that the State
round would be conducted at GNDU, Amritsar on 2nd Nov 2018 on the theme “Pharmacists
are your Medicine Experts” and the winner of this Institutional round is eligible to
participate in the State round.
