Lecture on 100 years of Jaliawala Bagh at PU
Department of music, Panjab University organized a lecture on 100 years of Jallianwala
Baghby Prof. Sukhmani Bal Riar, Deptt of History, PU here today.
Prof. Riar gave the historical background as to why this happened correlating with the
ongoing Nationalist struggle which the Indians were waging against the British rulers
100 years ago. She also explained that how General Dyer marched to the Bagh and opened
fire killing more than 1000 people in 10 minutes. These were the martyrs who gave up
their lives so that we could be an independent nation in 1947, she added. The students
were apprised that the revenge of this episode was taken by Sr. Udham Singh 20 years
Students and faculty payed their homage by observing 2minute silence as a mark of
respect for those who lost their lives.

Gender Based Violence discussed at PU
The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University organized in its special
lecture series, invited of Mr Sanam Suthirath Wazir, Senior Campaigner, Amnesty
International India here today.
Mr Wazir kick-started the interaction by stating that it has now become tough to talk
about social taboos, especially concerned to gender equality, at public spaces. Mr
Sanam’s talk revolved around Gender Based Violence (GBV) which creates both
physiological as well as psychological pressure on women. He emphasised on the
importance of women first being economically independent. He then pointed out the
unnoticed problems of women such as women being used as “tactics of violence”, rising
number of cases of "quick character assassination", and ignorance towards existence of
“Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” which women have to go through. Having shared many of
his own experiences relating to an undefined culture, lack of freedom to expression
and general unacceptability, he clearly initiated a thought process particularly
amongst the men present. He ended with an urge asking everyone to simply stop
accepting and start questioning the ‘usual’.
Dr. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties emphasized that it
is high time that we should start challenging gender stereotype in our society and the
same should be started from our own families.
The session was followed up by questions from the students.

6th Convocation of USOL, PU
University School of Open Learning, Panjab University, Chandigarh, celebrated its 6th
Convocation and 46th Annual Prize Distribution Function on 25th March, 2019. The
function was presided over by Dean University Instruction, Professor Shankarji Jha and
Mr. K.P. Singh, DGP Vigilance (Haryana) delivered the convocation address. Mr. K.P.
Singh is a writer with twenty books to his credit and also a philanthropist dealing
with various shades of humanitarian issues. He has been honoured ten times for his
contribution to the police services. The convocation was attended by other
dignitaries like Dr. Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Sanjay Kaushik,
Director of ICSSR and Dean, College Development Council and the Registrar Prof.
Karamjit Singh.
Mr. K.P. Singh congratulated the students on receiving their degrees and emphasised
the need to put in practice what one learn. Mr. Singh’s speech was dotted with
various anecdotes which laid stress on the value of action in maintaining the unity
and integrity of the country while maintaining human dignity. He cited the example of
a river to emulate its patience and calmness. Prof. Shankarji Jha emphasised upon the
idea of India, Indianness and the dire need to protect our Indianess. His focus was
on the preservation of human values which have perennial significance.
Chairperson, Professor Yojna Rawat highlighted the events and activities carried out
throughout the year. She spoke about the various special lectures organized by all
Departments to cater to the academic needs of the students. Workshops for enhancing
the development of the faculty and development of E-Content were organized. A special
Workshop was organized for enlightening the faculty regarding the parameters for NAAC.
One of the highlights of the previous year was the Book Festival organized by the USOL
Library wherein one thousand books were selected by the faculty members for the
As many as 94 students were conferred degrees. Four members from the non-teaching
staff were also honoured for their meritorious services.

Zoocon-2019 at PU
Department of Zoology, Centre for Advance studies (UGC), Panjab University, Chandigarh
will hold a two day National Conference, Zoocon-2019, as a part of outreach effort
in relation to “ Biodiversity for Human Health and Social Welfare: Current Challenges
and Achievables” on 26th-27th March, 2019. The sponsoring authority of conference is
UGC-CAS II and DST-Purse. The occasion will be graced by Professor Shankarji Jha, Dean
University Instructions, Panjab University, Chandigarh and other distinguished guests
across the country. Dr. A.K. Singh, Director General, Life Sciences, DRDO, Ministry of
Defence, Govt. of India and Dr. R.K. Manchanda, Director General, Central Council for
Research in Homeopathy, New Delhi, will be the Chief Guests of the symposium in the
succeeding days. The Keynote address will be delivered by Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai, Former
Vice- Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, Jammu and Kashmir
ZOOCON-2019 would include five technical sessions, preceded by an inaugural session,
with main focus on finding real world solutions for linking biodiversity with human
health and well being. The multidimensional event would incorporate technical
presentations and talks by the renowned speakers and researchers from academia and
industry. The conference will also involve oral/poster presentation session on
biodiversity for Human health and societal welfare to share information and stimulate
discussion among the participants.
G.P. Sharma Oration Award Ceremony will also be held on day 1 of the conference. The
award is conferred every year by the Department of Zoology, P.U. to a renowned
Cytogeneticist. The oration will be delivered by Prof. Saroj Ghaskadbi, Department of
Zoology, Savitribai Phle Pune University. She will share her inventive vision with the
audience on the topic “Oxidative damage and its Relevance to Diabetes”.
Other invited speakers embraced in the conference are Dr. Shailja Singh, Special
Centre for Molecular Medicine, JNU, New Delhi, Dr. Surendra Ghaskadbi, Emeritus
Scientist (CSIR), MACS-Agharkar Research Institute, Pune, Prof. Shyam Sharma, National
Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali, Prof. Kanwaljit Chopra,
UIPS, Panjab University Chandigarh and Prof. Akshay Anand, Department of Neurology,
PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The conference will be concluded by a valedictory function. The valedictory address
will be delivered by Dr. R.K. Manchanda, Director General, Central Council for
Research in Homeopathy, New Delhi, and prize distribution for best oral and poster

Yuvsatta (Youth For Peace)-an NGO and Centre for Social Work, Panjab University
organized an interaction with Mr. David L. Caprara , International Vice President of
Global Peace Foundation and Nonresident Fellow, Global Economy & Development at
Brookings Institution, USA, here today.
Mr. David Caprara started his address with rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi whose 150th
anniversary is being celebrated around the world this year. He mentioned that many of
world’s greatest leaders and thinkers in last century got their inspiration from about
Mahatma Gandhi, be it Martin Luther King Jr. , Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Aung San
Suu Kyi, Richard Attenborough any many others. And for him also Gandhi is a role
model, which he advises young people also to follow his footsteps. Mr. David also
inspired young participating students to always dream big and accomplish their goals.
At the same time he also mentioned that now a day we need Global Young people, as
globalization indicates that the growing importance of continental and global levels
is occurring together with the increasing salience of local and regional levels.
Ealier, Dr. Monica Munjial, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work in her welcome address
gave brief introduction of the Centre.
Introducing the Global Peace Foundation and speaker David Caprara, Mr. Pramod Sharma,
founder-coordinator of Yuvsatta said that Global Peace Foundation is an international,
non-sectarian organization that promotes an innovative values-based approach to peace
building and strongly believes in Indian ethos of Vashudhev Kutumbkam- which portrait
that whole world is one family.
Mr. David Caprara also offered internship for Panjab University students in Global
Peace Foundation national chapters at Nepal, India, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand &
Uganda etc.

David Caprara visited Department of Gandhian & Peace Studies where the Chairperson
Dr. Ashu Pasricha showed him their Department and later took him to Gandhi Bhawan.
