Annual Demonstration Moot organized at PU

The Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised its Annual
Demonstration Moot. The proposition of the Demo Moot was based on the Constitution of
India. Hon'ble Mr. Justice Amit Rawal and Hon'ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi, sitting
judges of the Hon'ble High Court of Panjab and Haryana. The event was held under the
guidance of the Prof. Meenu Paul, Chairperson, Department of Laws, Panjab University,
who further extended a warm welcome to the judges. The proceedings which continued for
one hour, was followed by Questions and Answers session. The Hon'ble Bench elaborated
upon the art of advocacy and suggested points of focus for every aspiring advocate and
judge. Dr. Vandana A. Kumar, Coordinator, Moot and Debating Society, encouraged student
participation in the activity.

PU Students shine in test conducted by BARC
Eight students namely Nitin Garg, Gurpreet Singh, Ripanpreet Kaur, Alka
Kataria, Mamta Tyagi, Parul Sharma, Pratishtha Sharma, Saloni Chawla of Centre for
Medical Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh have came out with flying colors in
passing the Radiation Safety Officer-III examination conducted by Radiological Physics
& Advisory Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC), Mumbai in September, 2019.
These students are now placed in various hospitals of India.
Each year the cancer treatment facilities and the sophistication of the
radiotherapy equipment are increasing enormously. When it comes to talent, one often
need not look beyond Panjab University. Medical physicists contribute to the
effectiveness of radiological imaging procedures by assuring that best radiation safety
practices are followed. They collaborate with radiation oncologists to design and
execute cancer patient specific treatment plans.

Mediation and Negotiation Competition in UILS, PU
The University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University, Chandigarh
is organising the 3rd edition of its annual Intra Department Mediation and Negotiation
Competition on 20th and 21st September, 2019. Like every year, the event is being
organised by the Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Client Counselling (CCL) Board
of the Department, under the guidance of their faculty coordinator, Dr. Shruti Bedi,
and Dr. Rattan Singh, Director, UILS.
In order to garner the interest of students and to bring to their notice the
benefits of the upcoming field of mediation and arbitration, several demonstrations and
training sessions were conducted by the Board. Here, the students were made to
understand how the process of Alternate Dispute Resolution works through day-to-day
examples. This piqued the curiosity of many, and led to an extremely overwhelming
response for the upcoming competition.
The intra-department competition will take place over two days, during which
the students will go head to head in five consecutive rounds. Over three hundred
students grouped in teams of three each will compete to reach the coveted finals, being
adjudged by the Honourable Justice G. S. Sandhwalia and Justice Mahesh Grover, Hon’ble
Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The students in each team will play the roles of a Mediator, Client and
Counsel, and will qualify for the subsequent rounds based on their collective marks and
the rank attained by them thereof. Every round will be judged by professional mediators
and eminent lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The winners will be awarded the titles of Best Team, Best Mediator, Best
Negotiating Pair, and other individual awards, along with cash prizes and trophies. The
competition will help bring the budding lawyers out of their comfort zones, and
inculcate in them the skill to settle disputes peacefully, thereby reducing the ever
increasing burden on the judicial machinery.

National Seminar on “Food Security and Sustainable Development”
National Seminar on “Food Security and Sustainable Development” was organised by Dr. SS
Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab
University, Chandigarh under UGC-SAP (DRS-II). SAP Coordinator & Chairperson,
Dr.SSBUICET Prof Sanchita Chauhan welcomed the dignitaries.
Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU in his address, highlighted the need of
Food Security. He emphasised the need of eliminating hunger and poverty by scientific
measure of ensuing food security in India.
Dr. Narendra Singh, Additional Director, Defence Institute of High Altitude
Research, DIHAR, DRDO in his keynote address on “Fresh Food Security and Sustainable
Development in High Altitude Conditions of Ladakh”, highlighted the food related issues
and challenges faced by people engaged in duty at high altitudes and gave an insight
into the possible solutions which are the need for the present. He also emphasized the
need of collaborative research between research organizations like DRDO and Panjab
Dr. Prabodh S. Halde, Head, Technical Regulatory, Marico India Pvt. Ltd talked
about the regulatory landscape of food safety and how the food security issues are
evolving. He also encouraged the students to develop business concepts in food sector
and to become entrepreneurs.
Prof S K Soni, Chairperson, Department of Microbiology, PU deliberated on Food
Security & Sustainable Development through Microbial Fermentation.
About 200 participants from academia and industry participated in the seminar
through oral presentations and exhibited their posters on the theme of the Seminar.

PU VC releases Logo of Youth Festival
‘Recognize Your Inner Being’ is the theme of forthcoming PU Youth Festival, the
logo of which was unveiled by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University,
Chandigarh. He said that these festivals are organized to expose the hidden talent and
power of youth. Wishing a golden future to the youth, PU VC said that youth is full of
energy which should be utilized for bringing improvement of the nation. Prof. Kumar
urged the organizers to spread the message of save environment of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
during these festivals by banning the use of plastic.

Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director Youth Welfare informed that the Zonal Youth Festival
of Panjab University will commence during the last week of the September’ 2019. Govt
College for Girls, Sector 42 Chandigarh will host the all items of girls and Govt.
College of Commerce & Business Administration, Sector-50, Chandigarh will host the
festival of co-educational colleges of Chandigarh Zone.

Dr. Jaura further explained that all the affiliated colleges of Panjab
University are divided into twelve zones, where music, theatre, dance, fine arts,
literary items and heritage items will be competed.

The convener of Panjab University Inter Zonal Youth & Heritage Festival Dr.
Narinder Singh Sidhu, Principal, Guru Nanak National College, Doraha thanked the Vice
Chancellor during his welcome address for the trust shown by owing such a big
responsibility. Dr. Sidhu openly invited all the Principals and teachers to attend this
mega festival.

During this occasion Dr Parminder Singh, Director Sports, Conveners of Zonal
and Inter Zonal Festivals and Principal Dr. Paramjit Singh, Principal Dr Inderjeet
Kaur, Principal Dr Preet Mohinder Singh, Principal Dr Binu Dogra, Principal Nisha
Aggarwal, Principal Dr Kuldeep Kaur Dhaliwal, Principal Dr Surjeet Singh Sidhu,
Principal Dr Sushila Narang, Prof. Ajay Rana, Prof Mandeep Kaur and Prof Harmeet Kaur

To celebrate Swacchta Saptah, the University Institute of Legal Studies
organized a Tree Plantation-cum-Swacchta Awareness Drive in collaboration with NSS Team
in the front lawns of UILS building. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, PU was the Chief
Guest. He along with the Prof. Rattan Singh, Director UILS and other faculty members
planted a tree. The students and faculty members of UILS also planted some trees in the
lawns of UILS.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor encouraged students and staff members of UILS
to grow more and more trees so that we can preserve our environment from pollution.
