International workshop on “Chemistry and Biology of Complex Glycans” an event under
CRIKC
Five days International GIAN workshop on the theme “Chemistry and Biology of
Complex Glycans” kick started at Panjab University.
Prof. S. K. Mehta, Local GIAN Coordinator and Director, SAIF/CIL PU welcomed
Prof. Kuberan (Kuby) Balagurunathan, Foreign faculty, University of Utah, USA and
faculty and participants from various institutions. He also highlighted the major
objectives of the GIAN program including details of previous 14 GIAN courses conducted
by PU during Phase I and II. He also informed that MHRD has announced the commencement
of GIAN Phase III. The faculty is invited to submitted proposals for consideration by
Oct. 15, 2019 to be completed during 2020.
Dr. Deepak B. Salunke, Course Coordinator, gave brief overview of five day
workshop and highlighted the importance of area of carbohydrates and glycans. Prof.
Kuby, guest faculty from University of Utah, USA, elaborated the basics of Carbohydrate
chemistry and the beauty of sequential synthesis of polysaccharides. He interactively
explained importance of carbohydrates in everyday life and subsequently. He motivated
the participants to excel in their field by exhaustively utilizing available
facilities.

Counselling Workshop at GH-3, PU
Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA), in collaboration with Social
Substance organized a counseling workshop in Sarojini Hall (Girls Hostel 3), Panjab
University, Chandigarh. The main motive of this counseling session was to extend
relations with existing and future alumni and equip students with necessary knowledge
to resolve their mental health issues like abuse, addictions, anger management,
depression, Bereavement and loss and low self confidence.
Ms. Neelam Dhamija, Ms. Kamal Malhi and Ms. Kavita Sharma chaired this workshop
and had an interactive session with residents. They taught the students how they can
extract best from a challenging situation. Ms. Kavita Sharma acquainted residents with
harmful effects of overuse of gadgets and how to get rid of screen addictions. Ms.
Kamal Mahi told the students that overuse of phone or internet alert the reptilian
brain in human body and we must calm it through meditation and practice. She taught the
residents how to do meditation and exercise to detox mind and feel happy. She explained
that the root cause of anxiety these days is fear which is totally a trans state and
not permanent. We should love and comfort ourselves just like we expect somebody else
to comfort us. Ms. Neelam Dhamija addressed the questions asked anonymously by
residents and guided them how they can excel in academics and built self confidence.
The workshop was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ravneet Kaur, Warden, Girls
Hostel 3.

Blood Donation Camp
A Blood Donation Camp was organised by the Panjab University Teachers'
Association (PUTA) and Students Central Association (Evening Studies) at Department of
Evening Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, which evoked a very enthusiastic
response from the donors.
The prominent donors included Dr. Neeraj Aggarwal, University Institute Of
Hotel And Tourism Management and member of PUTA Executive. Approximately 150 persons
donated blood. Students showed a lot of enthusiasm in the event. 151 units of Blood was
collected during the camp.
Professor R.K. Singla, Dean Research was the Chief Guest on the occassin to
bless the donors. Professor Rajesh Gill, President PUTA encouraged the students and
appreciated the excellent work done by SCA-DES President Harkirat Singh and Secretary
Balraj Singh. Professor Gurpal Singh, Chairperson, DES-MDRC thanked the donors who came
forward to contribute to the noble cause.

International Day of Peace at PU
Mahatma Gandhi Peace Club of Institute of Educational Technology and Vocational
Education, Panjab University today celebrated International Day of Peace on the Theme:
“Climate Action for Peace”. Celebrations started with tree plantation in the institute
with a aim to cherish what the environment provides us would be the exact way for us to
live peacefully and in harmony with our precious environment . Each student adopted one
plant to make this world a greener place, to help in nurturing it to life and being
responsible for its growth. Students recited poems, gave speeches, presentations and
presented skits highlighting the different aspects of climate changes occurring across
the World.
Dr. Kanwalpreet Kaur, Chairperson, IETVE appreciated the efforts of the
students and said “a peaceful society is one where there is harmony between the
different institutions and equal opportunities for everyone. Peace will enable a
sustainable environment to take shape and a sustainable environment will help promote
peace”.

Tree Plantation at P.U. Sports Grounds
A Tree Plantation drive was organized by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor
Panjab University, Chandigarh at P.U. Sports Grounds in coordination with Dr. Parminder
Singh, Directorate of Sports and Department of Physical Education Panjab University,
Chandigarh. Around 100 trees were planted by PU VC, students and faculty members at
Panjab University sports grounds.

Intra Department Mediation and Negotiation Competition at PU
The two-day Intra Department Mediation and Negotiation Competition, 2019,
commenced at the University Institute of Legal Studies(UILS) Campus, here today. Over
300 students participated in the preliminary round, which was divided into two parts,
with fifty teams competing in each round. The rounds were presided over by trained
professional mediators from the Mediation Centre of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The propositions for the rounds, drafted by the Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) and
Client Counselling (CCL) Board, were well conceived by all the participating teams and
opened up a wide ambit for negotiation.
The Top Sixteen teams that were ranked the highest on the basis of their scores
in the preliminary rounds then qualified for the Quarter Finals. This round was also
adjudged by trained mediators and advocates of the High Court. The Confidential
Information for all the rounds was released fifteen minutes before the rounds began.
The Semi Finals will take place on Saturday, in which the Top Eight teams will go head
to head and compete for a spot in the coveted finals.

PU Professor invited as Indian delegate for China Innovation Tour
For promoting exchange and cooperation between India and China in the field of
science and technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People ’s
Republic of China has invited Dr. Rohit Kumar Sharma, Assistant Professor, Panjab
University to undertake the China Innovation Tour for Indian young scientists. Dr.
Sharma will be visiting the cities of Kunming and Shanghai from 22nd to 29th September,
2019 for scientific presentations and deliberations as part of Indian delegation of
young scientists from different institutions across the country. This event is being
co-organized and sponsored by China-South Asia Technology Transfer Center, Department
of Science and Technology of Yunnan Province, Yunnan Academy of Scientific along with
Shanghai Science and Technology Exchange Center. Dr. Sharma’s visit will include
exchange of academic and research ideas through activities such as field visits to
universities, science technology innovation (STI) enterprises and science parks for
exploration of future possibilities for cooperation between the two countries.

Faculty Training Programme

The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University
is organizing a one week faculty training school on “Hands-on Training and Advancements
in Chromatography” from September 23 to 28, 2019 under the initiative of UGC Networking
Resource Centre. The course will be attended by 20 selected faculty participants
representing 10 states across the country.

Present training course has been planned to provide insights and hands on training on
sophisticated chromatographic techniques. The course will give an opportunity to the
participants to interact with the technical experts from academia and industries. The
emphasis shall be on developing plumbing skills of handling simple to most advanced
chromatographic instruments (HPTLC, HPLC, UPLC and GC-Head Space). The training course
will cover the basic introductory lectures explaining the underlying principles and
practical sessions on method development, analysis technique and troubleshooting of
machines and methods.

Dr G. N. Singh, Director, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare, Government of India, Ghaziabad, will inaugurate the function and
deliver the Key Note Address on "Role of Separation Technologies in Setting
Pharmacopoeia Standards.”

Chairperson of the Institute, Professor Kanwaljit Chopra is the Programme Coordinator
of UGC-NRC Programme. Professor Maninder Karan (UIPS) will be the Coordinator of the
Course, while Dr Jai Malik (UIPS) will be the Joint Coordinator.

Sessions will open with a lecture on the Fundamentals of Chromatography by the Course
Coordinator, Professor Maninder Karan, followed by a lecture on Chemical Fingerprinting
of Ayurvedic Drugs & Formulations by HPTLC/HPLC by Professor Sanjay Jachak, Professor
and In-charge, Natural Products, NIPER, Mohali, Punjab.

MAKA Trophy celebrations at PU

Panjab University, Chandigarh in continuation to the
celebration of MAKA Trophy, today organized a special function to
honor the sports promoters who have contributed directly and
indirectly for the promotion of University Sports on the occasion of
International University Sports day. The chief Guest of the function
was Ms. Karnam Malleswari first Indian Women who got bronze medal in
Olympic Games.

Ms. Malleswari who is a recipient of Padma Shree, Rajeev
Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (highest sports award in the field of sports)
and Arjuna Award, in her address emphasised the importance of
University Sports for the promotion of Indian Sports. She appreciated
the efforts of PU VC in motivating the Principals, Teachers and
Coaches working in the affiliated colleges of Panjab University,
Chandigarh for creating sports culture in their respective premsies
and promised in providing all kind of support. She remembered fondly
about her affiliations with the State of Punjab.

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU informed about the
steps being taken to have Memorandum of Understanding between
Universities, Colleges, Sports Department of Punjab, Chandigarh and
Haryana. He also informed that various foreign Universities have shown
keen interest to sign the MoU with PU especially in the field of
sports.

Prof. Parminder Singh, Director of Sports,
informed that PU won this prestigious trophy after a gap of 14 years
with their continuous efforts in collaboration of affiliated colleges
of Panjab University. Since the inception of this trophy, PU won the
MAKA trophy 14 times. He expressed his sincere gratitude to all the
Principals of affiliated colleges, technical and ground support
provide by Phy. Edu. personnels of PU and also appreciated the support
provided by various National, State Sports Federation and Chandigarh
Sports Department in achieving the MAKA Trophy.

हिंदी विभाग में 'भाषाओं से दोस्ती' विषय पर परिचर्चा
भाषाओं का मेलजोल समाज के लिए जरूरी
हिंदी माह उत्सव श्रृंखला की छठी कड़ी में हिंदी विभाग के कही अनकही
विचार मंच की ओर से आज 'भाषाओं से दोस्ती' विषय पर परिचर्चा आयोजित की
गई। इस परिचर्चा में हिंदी भाषा के अतिरिक्त अन्य भाषा विभागों से
विशेषज्ञ वक्तव्य के लिए आमंत्रित किए गए। जिनमें पंजाबी विभाग से प्रो.
योगराज, अंग्रेजी विभाग से डॉ. मीनू गुप्ता और उर्दू विभाग से डॉ. अली
अब्बास शामिल हुए। अपने वक्तव्य में उन्होंने कहा कि हर भाषा की अपनी
सुंदरता एवं ताकत होती है। इसलिए हमें अधिक से अधिक भाषाओं से दोस्ती
करनी चाहिए। इससे हमारा दायरा, हमारा व्यक्तित्व एवं हमारा आपसी मेलजोल
भी बढ़ सकेगा और हम दूसरी भाषाओं में मौजूद साहित्य और संस्कृति से भी
परिचित हो सकेंगे। सभी वक्ताओं ने इस बात पर विशेष जोर दिया कि हमें हर
भाषा का सम्मान करना चाहिए क्योंकि भाषाएं जोड़ने का काम करती हैं तोड़ने
का नहीं। इस परिचर्चा में शोधार्थियों और विद्यार्थियों ने हिस्सा लिया।
जिनमें सुअम्बदा और शकुंतला शामिल हैं। परिचर्चा में अन्य विभागों के
शिक्षकों में प्रो. पंकज मालवीय, प्रो. रणवीर सिंह और डॉ. राजेश जायसवाल
शरीक हुए। इस अवसर पर विभागाध्यक्ष डॉ. गुरमीत सिंह और प्रो. सत्यपाल
सहगल भी उपस्थित रहे। इस कार्यक्रम का संचालन शोधार्थी बोबीजा ने किया।
