CHANDIGARH, 20.11.24-The Department of Zoology and Eco-Club ‘Parivesh’ of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, organised an educational visit to Kudrat Organic Farm, Bar Majra, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar. The aim of the visit was to make the students aware about the eco-friendly method of breaking down organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer. Mr. Dharminder, owner of the farm (Award winner from Government of Punjab in 2024 and from GADVASU, Ludhiana, in 2023) explained step-wise procedure for setting up vermiculture and vermicomposting units including different resources, raw materials, species of earthworms and tools required for the same. He deliberated upon the process of harvesting, packaging, storage and marketing of the vermicompost, and also of preparing vermiwash which can be used as a potent biofertilizer. The participants gained valuable insights about recent trends and advances in vermicomposting technology, and understood the role of vermicompost as a tool for agripreneurship development generating self-employment opportunities.
Officiating Principal Ms. Suman Mahajan lauded this initiative to provide first-hand in-depth knowledge about the complete process of eco-friendly fertilizer production. She added that such visits are crucial for widening the horizons of the students.
