Chandigarh, 22 February: Legal Literacy Cell of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women organised an interactive session titled ‘The Justice Interface: Connecting Students with Legal Expertise’. The programme aimed to enhance legal awareness and empower students with practical knowledge of their rights and responsibilities in contemporary society.
The resource persons for the session were alumna Dr. Shruti Bedi, Director of the University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Dr. Shaifali Dixit, Assistant Professor at Himachal Pradesh National Law University. Dr. Bedi emphasised the transformative role of legal education in shaping confident and informed citizens. Highlighting the Right to Life and Privacy, she referred to landmark Supreme Court judgments and underscored dignity as an intrinsic constitutional value. She also sensitised students to cyber abuse and online threats, advising them to safeguard their digital privacy and refrain from sharing personal passwords. Dr. Dixit elaborated on constitutional and statutory provisions related to women’s rights in India. She discussed laws addressing cruelty, domestic violence, and protection against harassment, explaining both their civil and criminal dimensions. Legal remedies available to women facing abuse, including provisions that categorise cruelty by a husband or relatives as a non-compoundable offence were also shed light upon. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, who engaged in thoughtful discussions and raised pertinent queries.
Officiating Principal Neena Sharma reiterated the significance of such initiatives, noting that exposure to legal knowledge equips students to face future challenges with confidence and awareness.
