Chandigarh, 19.05.2026:A review meeting on policing, law and order, traffic management, police modernization and implementation of various ongoing projects and reforms in Chandigarh Police was held today under the chairmanship of Sh. H. Rajesh Prasad, Chief Secretary, U.T. Chandigarh Administration.

Among those present in the meeting were Sh. Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary; Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda, DGP Chandigarh; Sh. Pushpendra Kumar, IGP Chandigarh; Sh. Sumer Partap Singh, SSP Security & Traffic; Ms. Kanwardeep Kaur, SSP City ; Sh. Amit Kumar, Additional Secretary Home and other senior officers of Chandigarh Police.

During the meeting, senior officers of Chandigarh Police gave a detailed presentation on the prevailing law and order situation, crime status, conviction rates, implementation of the three new criminal laws, traffic management initiatives, cyber crime monitoring systems, functioning of the Police Command and Control Centre and progress of various infrastructure and modernization projects. The meeting also reviewed the implementation status of CenCOPS, procurement of vehicles, budget utilization and the status of pending vacancies in Chandigarh Police.

The status of implementation of the three new criminal laws in U.T. Chandigarh was comprehensively reviewed during the meeting. It was apprised that Chandigarh is leading in the implementation of the new criminal laws. Officers further informed that systems and protocols relating to checks and balances for cyber crime under CenCOPS have been drafted and would be implemented shortly. The progress of shifting the police radio communication system from analog to digital mode was also discussed. The progress of ongoing infrastructure projects relating to the construction of new police stations also came up for discussion.

Reviewing the overall preparedness of Chandigarh Police, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need to further strengthen manpower, operational capacity and specialized training, keeping in view Chandigarh’s status as the capital of two States and one Union Territory, besides having several vital installations and major market areas. He directed that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) be put in place and regular as well as random monitoring of body camera footage be undertaken to ensure greater accountability and transparency in policing.

The Chief Secretary directed that focused efforts be made to further improve the conviction rate, particularly in heinous crimes, NDPS cases and cybercrime matters. Special emphasis was also laid on enhancing public awareness regarding cybercrime. He directed that extensive awareness campaigns be undertaken while strengthening institutional capacity and specialized skill sets to effectively deal with emerging cyber threats.

Reviewing traffic management measures, the Chief Secretary stressed the need to intensify road safety awareness among citizens, especially students. He directed that traffic signal management systems should be more dynamically aligned with traffic volume to ensure smoother vehicular movement and reduced congestion.

He also desired that all light points in the city be converted into a smart lighting system and emphasized greater use of CCTV cameras for better law and order and traffic management. He further directed that realization of traffic challan fines be reviewed to improve recovery efficiency. Issues pertaining to traffic management involving coordination with other departments were directed to be resolved expeditiously through inter-departmental coordination.

The Chief Secretary directed Chandigarh Police officials to further strengthen naka checking and maintain heightened vigilance in the border areas adjoining Mohali, Panchkula and New Chandigarh (Mullanpur) to ensure effective enforcement of law and order and close monitoring of inter-state movement. He also instructed that the Beat Box system be reviewed regularly and further strengthened to improve police presence, field-level responsiveness and overall public safety across Chandigarh.

The issue of manpower creation and filling of vacancies in Chandigarh Police was also reviewed during the meeting. The Chief Secretary also directed that matters relating to compassionate appointments in Chandigarh Police be expedited at the earliest.

The ongoing projects and schemes of the Department of Prisons & Correctional Administration were also reviewed during the meeting, including the ongoing Jeevandhara Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Avishkar Academy, additional construction works in Model Jail and the proposal for setting up of a gaushala and dairy farm.
