MAHENDERGARH, 21.07.26-The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has approved a one-year extension in the tenure of Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendergarh. Prof. Suneel Kumar, Registrar informed that the Hon'ble President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of the University, has exercised the powers conferred under the Central Universities Act, 2009, to extend the tenure of Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar with effect from July 28, 2026, for a period of one year or until the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The order was issued by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, on July 20, 2026.
Under the visionary leadership of Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar, the Central University of Haryana has recorded remarkable achievements in academics, research, innovation, infrastructure development, national and international rankings, and social outreach. During his tenure, the University has successfully implemented the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, strengthened quality teaching and learning, promoted a vibrant research ecosystem, and fostered strong industry-academia collaboration.
The University has established a significant global presence through its outstanding performance in prestigious international rankings. It made its debut in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, securing a position in the 1001–1200 global band and emerging as one of the leading universities in Haryana. The University also entered the QS World University Rankings 2026 for the first time, securing a place in the 1001–1100 global band. In recognition of its research excellence, the University earned distinction among India's leading institutions in the Citations per Paper indicator. Further strengthening its global academic profile, CUH was placed in the 301–350 band in the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026 and also registered a strong performance among Central Universities in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) rankings.
Research and innovation have received unprecedented impetus during the tenure of Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar. The University has secured research projects worth several crores of rupees from various national funding agencies. The establishment and strengthening of the Centre for Innovation and Incubation, promotion of industry-academia partnerships, startup culture, patents, and technology development have significantly enhanced the University's innovation ecosystem. Researchers and faculty members have made notable contributions in the fields of healthcare, biotechnology, environmental sciences, agriculture, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.
The University has also witnessed substantial infrastructure development. World-class facilities, including a Synthetic Athletics Track, state-of-the-art laboratories, an Advanced E-Mobility Lab, environmental research facilities, and modern library resources, have been developed to provide an enabling ecosystem for teaching, research, and innovation. These initiatives have created enhanced opportunities for students to excel at national and international levels in academics, research, and sports.
In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, the University has actively promoted multidisciplinary education, skill development, entrepreneurship, Indian Knowledge Systems, and research-oriented learning. It has signed numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with national and international universities, industries, research organizations, and government institutions, creating new opportunities for students and scholars in academics, research, internships, and professional development.
Demonstrating its commitment to society, the University has undertaken several impactful initiatives related to environmental conservation, rural development, women's empowerment, health awareness, digital literacy, cybersecurity, cleanliness, yoga, drug de-addiction, and community engagement. Through the active participation of the National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC), and various academic departments, the University has consistently carried out socially relevant programmes that have strengthened its engagement with the community.
