Chandigarh, September 13: The ongoing 6th Chandigarh Arts & heritage festival , organized by Department of Cultural Affairs Chandigarh Administration presented a rare event of a classical vocal recital by a hundred and seven years old classical vocalist  Padmavibhushan  Ustad Abdul Rashid khan. It was virtually astonishing for music lovers to see a renowned legend of an International stature at such a ripe age was performing live before the city audience. The audience raptured into applause as the Ustad commenced recital.

Today’s Cultural evening programme was inaugurated by Chief Guest   H. E Shri Shivraj V. Patil, Governor of Punjab & Administrator of UT, Chandigarh. Also present were Senior officers of Chandigarh Administration.

To mark the celebration of ongoing Chandigarh Arts & Heritage festival, Department of Cultural Affairs organized a Heritage Walk at Government Museum and Art Gallery Sector 10 on Saturday morning. Flagged off by Director Cultural Affairs Ms. Amandeep Kaur, more than 250 youth and citizens participated in the walk to the Le Corbusier Centre Sector 19 to spread out the message to preserve the city's rich heritage buildings and designed of Corbusier.

The participants were apprised about the city Heritage of the city beautiful. The Principal College of Architecture also highlighted the importance of Architectural Heritage of Chandigarh within Complex. Members of INTACH Chandigarh Chapter were also part of the Heritage Walk.

Tomorrow, On the concluding day of 6th Arts & Heritage Festival, there will be second Heritage Walk at 6 am from College of Architecture Sector 12 to  Govt Museum and Art Gallery  , Sector 10. Author interaction with Sir William Mark Tully, KBE shall take place at 4 pm at UT Guest followed by Vilasini Natyam – A Dance Recital   performance by Purvadhanashree from Hyderabad at 7 pm at Tagore theatre.


PROFILE OF Ustad Abdul Rashid khan

Born on August 19,1908 in a family of musicians Ustad ji received his entire trainings in music from his father Ustad Chote Yousuf Khan and later from his father’s elder brother Ustad Bade Yousuf khan.He was deeply influenced by other greats of his gharana like Ust Chand Khan and Ustad Mahtaab Khan.Ustad Abdul Rashid khan is the seniormost living representative of the traditional GWALIOR gharana of HINDUSTANI CLASSICAL MUSIC.He is a direct descendant of MIAN TAANSEN, the famous court musician of emperor AKBAR.Khan sahib himself has served as a court musician in different native states before and after independence.Khan sahib is the recipient of several awards and titles.He received the PADMABHUSHAN AWARD (2013) for his contribution to Indian Classical Music.Besides He has received the SANGEET NATAK ACADEMY AWARD(2009),BHUALKA AWARD(2010),ITC AWARD(1994),KASHI SWAR GANGA AWARD(2003),Dr Kulpati Munshi Sangeet Samman(2013)etc.He also received the state SANGEET NATAK ACADEMY AWARD,UTTAR PRADESH(1981).He was also conferred with titles like RAS SAGAR,SANGEET MAHARSHI,BANDISH SAMRAAT,SANGEET SARTAAJ by reputed organizations.Khan sahib was invited by The President of India Mr Pranab Mukherjee to perform at the Raashtrapati Bhawan.Khan sahib’s CD Albums,titled “RASAN PIYA”(4 VOLUMES)and “JYOTISWARA” have been widely accepted by audiences all over INDIA and abroad.
