Chandigarh,16.04.15:Chandigarh Tourism as part of its initiatives to enhance the Heritage of Chandigarh is proposing to celebrate World Heritage Day on 18th April, 2015 through a series of events through the day. Chandigarh city, the brainchild of Le Corbusier, the greatest architect of the twentieth century and whose place in history is ineluctable is famous internationally for its iconic modern architecture, set amidst lush green landscape at the foothills of the Shivaliks.

World Heritage day is celebrated internationally on 18th April and this year marks the 50th anniversary of ICOMOS (International Council for Sites and Monuments) 1965-2015, the international body for valorisation, appreciation and protection of World Heritage which includes sites, building ensembles, monuments and artefacts. Established by UNESCO it aims to raise public awareness about the diversity and vulnerability of the world’s built monuments and heritage sites and the efforts required to protect and conserve them.

This day is also commonly known as World Heritage Day. However, whilst UNESCO is the organisation that lists World Heritage Sites, this day is not just about the listed sites, but concerns all cultural heritage places and landscapes of international, national and local significance. The celebrations are to engage the youth and to get the public involved in the Conservation, and valorisation of the local cultural heritage.

In collaboration with the Chandigarh College of Architecture, the Tourism Department has planned the events for the day that are open to all citizens of Chandigarh. The Celebrations begin with a ‘Treasure Hunt’ commencing from the Museum, Sector 10 at 7:30am and culminating at the Open hand ‘trench of Contemplation ‘.

Another event to popularise the Capitol Complex which is underway for UNESCO World Heritage Status as part of the Transnational Serial Nomination has been opened to the public will be held at the Open hand – An Art Competition. Participants from all age groups are welcome participate and it will be held from 9:00am to 11:00am.

At 4pm, a quiz on the theme ‘Heritage of Chandigarh’ will also be conducted at the Capitol Complex.

The celebrations shall conclude with attractive prizes, certificates and cash awards to the winners of these events at the Capitol Complex, 5pm onwards.

The   initiatives of the Tourism Department are focussed to sensitise the citizens of the City Beautiful to various aspects of its natural, cultural and modern heritage. Beginning with the World Heritage day, a yearlong calendar of events is on the anvil.
