Reckong Peo,22.05.17-On the occasion of “International Day for Biodiversity”, on 22nd May,2017 under supervision of Sh. Kunal Satyarthi, Joint Member Secretary, Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board, organized Biodiversity Day Celebration at district Headquarters of Kinnaur, Reckong Peo. The present theme for International Day for Biodiversity was: “Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism” which provided an opportunity to raise awareness and to take suitable measurements towards the important contribution of sustainable tourism both for economic growth and also for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh was chosen as a suitable destination for celebration of International Day for Biodiversity. Tribal region of Kinnaur because of its most enchanting and beautiful landscape, unique, rich and extraordinary terrain, culture and heritage has attracted a large number of visitors year after year. This uniqueness in climate, terrain and culture has motivated eco-tourists to experience what this region has to offer. Since tourism is flourishing in this area the concept of homestays, eco-tourism, camping sites and living closely with the nature philosophy can be best examined and explored here, somehow it can be said that idea of sustainable tourism is already present and the whole working mechanism of the idea can be seen while visiting this region. It is obvious that the valley holds an enormous tourism potential for domestic as well as foreign tourist. Because of the growing popularity among tourists and the interest of inhabitants to use the tourist potential of this valley, the region will face a considerable boom in tourism in the years to come and this may become a challenge for tourism development in a sustainable manner hence it was critical to make local stakeholders aware of how sustainable tourism practices can be carried and biodiversity can be preserved.

               Panchayat pradhans from 65 panchayats of the district and Biodiversity Management Committees members, Zila Parishads and B.D.C. Members participated in the International Biodiversity Day celebration. Sh. Jagat Singh Negi Hon’ble deputy speaker (Vidhan Sabha) and Member of Legislative Assemble (MLA), Kinnaur was the chief guest, Smt. Archarna Sharma, Director Deptt. of Env. Sc. & Tech., Shimla, Sh. Kunal Satyarthi, Joint Member Secretary, HP State Biodiversity Board, various forest officials from Forest Department, and various officials from State Biodiversity Board participated in the celebration. 200 school children from various schools across the participated in the Biodiversity rally.
