JODHPUR,31.08.18-Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna and is also called Gokulashtami or Krishna Janmashtami. The festival marks the celebration of the lord’s birth. Since he was born in the night, people wake up, take a bath and then observe a fast during the day. The temple is decorated and a small swing is also kept with Krishna sitting in it. After 12 am, people break their fast, perform pooja and celebrate the birth of Krishna by swinging him.

Sabudana Khichdi from Ranbanka Palace’s royal kitchen is a complete delicacy for those who are fasting. This treat is also easy to make. If you are planning to make this dish the royal way at home for Janmashtami, here is the tip and trick:

Ingredients:

Sabudana/Sago – 2/3 cup
Roasted Peanut – 1/3 cup
Potato – 1no.
Green Chillies – 2
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Lemon Juice – 1 tsp
Cilantro – few sprig
Ghee/Oil – 1.5 tbsp
Rock Salt (Sendha Namak) – to taste

Method to Make Sabudana Khichdi

1. Rinse and soak sago for 4 hours with just enough water. The water should be just above the sago level; if you use too much water sago will be soggy, drain water and keep aside for 6 hours or overnight. If the sago is of a very good quality then even 30 minutes is enough.
2. Roast Peanut and make peanuts into fine powder
3. Chop green chills, peel potato and dice it.
4. In a pan heat ghee/oil add cumin seeds and allow it to crack. Add curry leaves, green chillies and sauté for 30 seconds. Now add potato, cover it and cook until potato gets tender.
5. Next add sago, peanuts and mix well; cook with the lid on for 5-7 minutes on medium flame. Add salt, cilantro, and lemon juice toss well and cook for one more minute.
Well your sabudana khichadi is ready
