Chandigarh, February 2: Today to celebrate the World Wetland Day, Department of Forests & Wildlife, Chandigarh Administration organized a function in collaboration with NGO- Avian Habitat and Wetland Society & Yuvsatta at Sukhna Lake.

D.K.Tiwari, IAS, Secretary, Forests & Wildlife was the chief guest on this occasion. Santosh Kumar, IFS, Conservator of Forests & Chief Wild Life Warden, & Kuldeep Sharma, IFS, DCF (WL) were also present during the function. And around 100 students from Gurukul Global School & Moti Ram Arya Sr. Sec. Model  School participated in the wetland day celebrations.

Welcoming the Chief Guest, Santosh Kumar, Conservator of Forest (CF) and       Chief Wildlife Warden, UT Chandigarh informed that Wetland habitats are the crucial links in the conservation strategies for Wildlife especially Aquatic Birds in the country. The existence of Wetlands has direst co-relation with the Biodiversity. Every year migratory birds start flocking in the Sukhna lake in winters. Prominent species among them are Bareheaded Goose, Brahmy Duck, Common Coot, Grey & Purple Herone, Mallard, Common Pochard etc.

Addressing the students Sh. DK Tiwari, IAS, Secretary, Forests & Wildlife emphasized on the importance and rich biodiversity of the wetlands and need for protection and conservation of these valuable ecosystems.

A Photo Exhibition on the Resident & Migratory Birds of Sukhna lake , Chandigarh City & its neighboring regions was also inaugurated by the Chief Guest on this occasion. The photo exhibition was organized by Avian Habitat and Wetland Society with an objective to sensitize the school children and the public about the wildlife & importance of Wetlands for their conservation. The photo exhibition  displayed photos of  by Mr. Rajiv Das  member of India Nature Watch, Mr. Jasbir Randhawa, Mrs Sarabjit Kaur, Yuvsatta NGO, Navjit Singh & Mr. Narbir Singh of AHWS.
