Chandigarh, 8 August: In continuation of Van Mahotsav celebrations aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, and as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam 2.0’ initiative and ‘Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect’ Program of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, held two plantation drives in adopted villages Badheri and Buterla.
The NSS Units, UBA Cell and Eco-Club Parivesh, in collaboration with the Department of Forest and Wildlife, Chandigarh Administration, Mission LiFE, and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, organised plantation drive at village Badheri, Sector 41-D, Chandigarh. Mr. Hardeep Singh Buterla, Councillor, Village Badheri, joined residents and volunteers in planting 100 saplings of diverse trees and shrubs, including tecoma, kaner, rose, champa, and raat ki rani, in community parks. In a parallel effort, the Department of Botany, in collaboration with the UBA Cell, conducted another plantation drive in village Buterla. A total of 150 plants such as hibiscus, chandni (single and double), raat ki rani, and kaner were planted at multiple sites. The drive commenced with the symbolic planting of a sapling by Buterla Councillor Mr. Hardeep Singh Buterla, who is also the former Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh, followed by mass participation from villagers and volunteers.
Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma emphasised the relevance of such drives in today’s context, when the world is grappling with the effects of global warming. She highlighted that trees, with their capacity to absorb atmospheric carbon, can serve as a vital solution to this pressing global issue.
