Chandigarh, April 16-Gulzar Singh Bobby today officially took charge as a member of the Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes in the presence of Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema and Chairman of the Commission, Jasvir Singh Garhi.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema congratulated Gulzar Singh Bobby on his appointment and expressed hope that he would uphold the teachings of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in his role. Cheema highlighted Bobby's background in working for the downtrodden section of society as President of the Sangrur district SC wing of AAP, saying this experience would be invaluable in his new position.
Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi welcomed Bobby to the Commission, stating that his dedication would further strengthen the organization's efforts to protect and promote the interests of Scheduled Castes in Punjab.
Gulzar Singh Bobby, a resident of Sangrur city with roots in village Bangawali, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has been actively involved in social work, serving as Joint Secretary of the Sangrur district SC Wing of AAP since 2016 and President since 2018.

Laljit Singh Bhullar, today inaugurated infra projects worth RS.1.10 crore in six schools of Patti constituency as part of the "Punjab Sikhya Kranti" initiative.
S. Bhullar dedicated various development projects to students at Government Elementary School Thatha, Government Elementary School Chaudhriwala, Government Elementary School Dargapur, Government Elementary School Kheda, Government High School Dadehar Sahib and Government High School Thathian Mahantan in the constituency.
The Cabinet Minister said that the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann led government has launched the "Sikhya Kranti" initiative to transform government schools and elevate educational standards across the state. This initiative to ensure that children of our society, receiving education in government schools, can establish their significant place in this era of global competition.
S. Laljit Singh Bhullar said that government schools are now equipped with modern facilities including high-speed Wi-Fi connections, clean drinking water, separate toilets for boys and girls, boundary walls, smart classrooms, integrated science labs, interactive panels, playgrounds and modern furniture, further stating that this significant investment in infrastructure will create a conducive learning environment for students.
"The objective of this campaign is to raise educational standards and government schools are now surpassing private schools in terms of educational quality", said the Cabinet Minister, adding that the Punjab government is not only providing quality education but also fostering a favourable learning environment in government schools.

Vigilance Bureau arrests Scheduled Casts Finance Corporation District Manager taking Rs 10000 bribe
Chandigarh April 16, 2025 - The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state has arrested
Chiman Lal, posted as District Manager, Punjab Scheduled Caste Land Development and Finance Corporation, Tarn Taran, red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10000.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the state VB said the arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a complainant from village Gidhri Baghihari, in Tarn Taran district.
He further informed that the complainant has approached the VB and stated that his handicap sister had availed a loan of Rs 1,00,000 from the above said the corporation in 2009. Afterwards, the Government had announced a waiver of such loans under a relevant scheme but the aforementioned Manager had demanded a bribe Rs 10,000 from her to process and settle the loan waived of by the Government.
The spokesperson added that after a preliminary verification of this complaint the VB team laid a trap during which the said accused has been arrested while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. In this regard a case has been registered against the aforesaid accused under prevention of corruption act at VB police station Amritsar range. The accused would be produced in the competent court tomorrow and further investigation into this case was under progress, he said.

CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR, April 16:In a major crackdown against cross-border drug smuggling amidst the ongoing anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’, Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) arrested a key drug trafficker linked to a Pakistan-based smuggler after recovering 3.105 kg heroin and two .32 bore country-made pistols along with 37 cartridges and two magazines from his possession, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Wednesday.
The arrested accused has been identified as Jobanjit Singh alias Joban, a resident of village Kotli Sur Singh in Tarn Taran. The accused has a criminal history.
DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused had been receiving heroin consignments via drones from a Pakistan-based smugglers from past few months.
The DGP said that further investigations are ongoing to establish the backward and forward linkages to dismantle the entire network and more arrests are likely in coming days.
Sharing operation details, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) ANTF Nilabh Kishore said that police teams of ANTF Border Range Amritsar had received a reliable input that accused Jobanjit alias Joban is notorious drug smuggler and has recently retrieved a drug and weapon consignment from across the border.
Acting Swiftly, Police teams led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Border Range Gurpreet Singh launched an intel-based operation and apprehended accused Jobanjit Singh from his house located in village Kotli Sur Singh, he added.
A case FIR No. 99 dated 15.04.2025 has been registered under sections 21-C, 23 and 25 of the NDPS Act and section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station ANTF in SAS Nagar.

Chandigarh/Kharar (S.A.S. Nagar), April 16:The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Mr. Lal Chand Kataruchak today said that Punjab has witnessed the bumper crop of wheat this time which would help in achieving the 124 LMT Central pool target with ease.
Taking stock of the Wheat procurement operations at Kharar Mandi, the Minister said that till now 4.19 LMT of wheat has arrived in the mandis of the State and 3.22 LMT has been procured. Payments worth Rs. 151 Crore have been made into the farmers' accounts.
He further said that as per the directions of the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann while payments are being made within 24 hours of the crop procurement, there has been no let up in lifting too.
Divulging more, the Minister pointed out that this time the quality of wheat has been of very high standard and the agencies as well as the Commission Agents have been directed to ensure foolproof arrangements for tarpaulins and crates in order to save the crop from inclement weather. Also, there has been no shortage of bardana.
Elaborating more, he said that the State Government is increasing the storage capacity by 31 LMT and this time, the central agencies would directly lift the 15 LMT crop from mandis itself in the next few days.
The Minister made it clear that the farmers won't have to face any difficulty in the mandis and he is personally reviewing the arrangements as per the directions of the Chief Minister. He also said that the officers connected with the procurement work have been directed against any laxity so as to make sure that the farmers and arhtiyas don't encounter any hassle in the mandis.
Among others present on the occasion included the SDM Kharar Gurmandar Singh, DFSC Dr. Navreet and District representatives of the procurement agencies, arhtiyas and the farmers.

Vigilance Bureau arrests Market Committee Mandi Supervisor for taking Rs. 7,000 bribe
Chandigarh, April 16, 2025 –The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state on Wednesday arrested Rashpal Singh, Mandi Supervisor posted at Market Committee, Kahnuwan, in Gurdaspur district for accepting a bribe of Rs. 7,000.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the state VB said the aforementioned accused has been arrested based on a complaint lodged by a Commission Agent in Grain Market, Kahnuwan.
He further added that the complainant has approached the VB stating that the Market Committee Kahnuwan had wrongly imposed a penalty of Rs. 18,610 on his firm in December 2024. Despite repeated attempts to resolve the matter, Market Committee officials refused to withdraw the penalty. As the wheat procurement season was approaching, the complainant needed to renew the expired license of his another firm, registered in his mother’s name. The complainant alleged that when he approached the said accused Rashpal Singh to settle both issues, the supervisor had demanded Rs. 8,000 as a bribe. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs. 7,000.The spokesperson informed that after a preliminary verification of this complaint a VB team from Amritsar range laid a trap during which Rashpal Singh was caught red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs. 7,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. In this regard a case has been registered against the aforementioned accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at VB police station Amritsar range.

Chandigarh, April 16:The Punjab Government led by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is wholeheartedly committed to the safekeeping of the interests of all the stakeholders connected with the procurement operations in the mandis. The labourers undertaking loading work in the mandis are also an intricate part of the procurement process. Hence their labour rates have been increased to Rs. 2.64 Per Sack.
Divulging more details, the Minister while interacting with the mediapersons at Anaj Bhawan here today said that until a year ago, the labourers used to get Rs. 1.80 Per Sack which was increased by 41 paise to Rs. 2.21 Per Sack . Now, a further increase of 43 paise has been effected in the labour rates. In one year, the labour rates have been increased by 84 paise likely to result in the total benefit to the tune of Rs. 10 Crore to the Labourers, revealed the Minister adding that the present step is yet another proof of the State Government's committment to improve the lot of the labour class.
Regarding the storage space, Mr. Kataruchak pointed out that in a VC held today with the Deputy Commissioners of all the districts, he has directed the DCs to ensure adequate storage space he has been assured of no difficulties on this issue.
The Minister also disclosed that 2676 Purchase Centres have been set up including 1864 Regular ones and 812 Temporary. Till now, 4.19 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) of wheat has arrived in the mandis of the State and out of this, 3.22 LMT has been procured which comes out to 76 percent. Also, payments worth Rs. 151 Crores in respect of the MSP have been credited into the accounts of the farmers.
Focussing on the other welfare centric measures of the present State Government, the Minister added that earlier the margin money of the depot holders was increased from Rs. 50 Per Quintal to Rs. 90. Per Quintal after 8 years.
Assuring the farmers that the Punjab Government stands committed to procuring every single Grain produced by them, Mr. Kataruchak said that all out arrangements have been made to ensure a hassle free procurement season.

Chandigarh, April 16In line with the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government’s top priority of timely and hassle-free delivery of citizen-centric services, the Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema on Wednesday announced that following the Revenue Department, the Transport Department has been directed to clear all pending citizen-centric services beyond the stipulated timelines on a campaign basis by April 25, 2025.
Addressing a press conference here at Punjab Bhawan, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar has directed the concerned officers of the Transport Department to address the pendency of services, including Vahan and Sarathi Services, by the specified deadline. Cheema assured that after April 25, all services would be delivered within the stipulated timelines.
Highlighting the initiatives undertaken by the Transport Department to ensure efficient service delivery, the Finance Minister said that 20 services were being provided through Doorstep Delivery via call center number 1076 and Sewa Kendras, allowing citizens to access services without visiting RTO offices. He announced that all citizen-centric services will be soon shifted to E-Sewa Kendras (1076), eliminating the need for physical visits to RTO offices. “A WhatsApp Chatbot will be introduced soon to facilitate faceless services, enhancing convenience and efficiency for citizens”, he added.
Underscoring the importance of accountability in ensuring the smooth delivery of services, Finance Minister said that senior officers of the Transport department including State Transport Commissioner (STC) would regularly monitor service delivery to prevent undue delays. “In case of any undue delay, the responsible government officers or employees will face strict action”, said Cheema.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that these initiatives are focused on leveraging technology and innovative solutions to improve governance and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. He said that the government aims to set a benchmark for citizen-centric governance by prioritizing the timely delivery of services.

Dr. Baljit Kaur lauded the dedicated efforts of the Society in empowering children who are unable to speak, hear, or see and helping them integrate into the mainstream of society. She announced a financial grant of Rs. 5 lakh for the development of school infrastructure, emphasizing the government’s support for such meaningful initiatives.
“The government is taking along every section of society to build a Rangla Punjab,” she said, adding that while there may be some gaps, organizations like these fill them with selfless service and dedication.
Dr. Baljit Kaur also shared her personal experiences of treating eye ailments in Muktsar and called upon the public to pledge to donate their eyes. Drawing inspiration from Helen Keller, she praised the teachers of the Deaf and Blind School and said, “These children are not disabled-they are gifted, and they are already influencing society with their talent.”

CHANDIGARH, April 16: With the war against drugs “Yudh Nashian Virudh” waged on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eradicate drug menace from state entered 47th day, Punjab Police on Wednesday arrested 121 drug smugglers and recovered 4.7 kg heroin, 2.6 kg opium and ₹1.08 lakh drug money from their possession. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached to 6284 in just 47 days.
The operation was conducted on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav simultaneously in all 28 Police districts of the state.
Notably, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has asked the Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendent of Police to make Punjab drug free state. The Punjab government has also constituted a 5-member Cabinet Sub Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the war against drugs.
Divulging details, Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla informed that over 250 Police teams, comprising over 1900 police personnel, under the supervision of 88 gazetted officers have conducted raids at as many as 499 locations across the state leading to the registration of 71 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. Police teams have also checked as many as 554 suspicious persons during the day long operation, he added.
The Special DGP said that with the state government has enforced a three-pronged strategy— Enforcement, Deaddiction and Prevention (EDP)— to eradicate drugs from the state, the Punjab Police as part of ‘De-addiction’ has convinced seven persons to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.

Vigilance Bureau Flying Squad nabs Sub-Inspector red handed taking Rs. 80,000 bribe
Chandigarh, April 16 -The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing drive against corruption, on Wednesday, arrested Sub-Inspector (SI) Harmesh Kumar, in-charge of Police Post Kalwa, under Noorpur Bedi police station, in Rupnagar district red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs. 80,000.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the state VB said the arrest came after a complainant of village Toora, in Phillour Sub-division, Jalandhar district approached the Bureau about the accused had demanded illegal gratification.
He further added that the complainant has approached the VB and alleged that the aforementioned police personnel had demanded a bribe of Rs 1,50,000 to help him in a police case registered against him. He further informed that the said SI had already taken Rs 20,000 as a first instalment in this regard and demanding the remaining money.
The spokesperson further added that after a preliminary verification of this complaint a VB team from flying squad laid a carefully planned trap during which the said police official was caught red-handed accepting Rs 80,000 as a second instalment of bribe from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. In this regard a case has been registered against the accused under Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Flying Squad-1, police station Punjab at Mohali.
He revealed that interrogation of the arrested personal is currently underway for possible involvement of other accomplices. The VB officials are scrutinizing past complaints against the SI to identify any patterns of his misconduct. The accused would be produced in the competent court tomorrow and future investigations are underway, he said.

Chandigarh, April 16:Punjab Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Wednesday said that Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is fully prepared to meet the demand and supply of power for upcoming paddy season.
Holding a high-level meeting with PSPCL CMD Mr. Ajoy Sinha and all the Directors and Chief Engineers here, Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO stated requisite preparations had been made to ensure regular supply of power to consumers. The Minister pointed out that about 17 thousand MW of power would be required during the paddy season for which PSPCL had made advance arrangements. Besides this, uninterrupted supply of power will also be ensured for domestic consumers in the season across the state, he added.
Sardar Harbhajan Singh ETO said that Punjab government led by Chief Minister Sardar Bhagwant Singh Mann had provided uninterrupted supply to the consumers of the state in the last three years. He mentioned same practice would be ensured this season too this facilitating consumers with regular supply in the summer.
During the meeting, the Cabinet Minister directed the Powercom officials to carry out a survey of Bathinda Thermal Plant and Guru Amardas Thermal Plant (earlier known as GVK Thermal Plant) ,apart from this he also directed to to explore the possibilities of setting up solar power plants on the surplus land lying with the Corporation.
