CHANDIGARH, 22.02.25-To mark the celebration of National Mathematics Day, the Postgraduate Department of Mathematics, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, organised various activities. The event was sponsored by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The celebration comprised of a lecture on ‘Mathematics through the ages: from Shoonya to Artificial Intelligence’, and Inter-College Competitions that included Poster Presentation on the topic ‘Importance of Mathematics in Technology Advancement’, and Extempore Competition. Dr Kavita, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, was the Chief Guest and also the resource person for the lecture. The competitions of Extempore and Poster presentation witnessed enthusiastic participation of students from various colleges of the tricity. The top 3 winners of these competitions were awarded cash prizes. In another event, the Department organised an Inter-College Competition ‘Mathemagica 2025’, sponsored by Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy, Chandigarh Administration. Dr. Dilbag Singh Kahlon, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. As part of the event, three competitions, namely Mathematical Quiz, Power Point Presentation and Rangoli Making were held, that recorded enthusiastic participation of institutions from across the tricity. The first 3 position winners of all the competitions were awarded cash prizes.

Officiating Principal Ms. Suman Mahajan congratulated the Department on celebration of National Mathematics Day with the objective of apprising the students of the rich legacy of Indian Mathematics. She added that the contribution of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan should be an inspiration for the young mathematicians to work for advancement of this discipline.
