Chandigarh, August 20:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will undertake a coordinated zone-wise field exercise on August 21 and 22, 2026 to shift eligible street vendors, who have already been allotted designated vending sites through the prescribed draw-of-lots process.
Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, said here today that the exercise is being undertaken in compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Civil Appeal No. 4400 of 2026, titled Malkit Singh and Another versus State of U.T. Chandigarh & Others, and in accordance with the provisions of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 and the Chandigarh Street Vending Bye-Laws, 2018. He said that the objective is to ensure systematic regulation of street vending while enabling eligible vendors to operate from their duly allotted vending sites.
The Commissioner further stated that the exercise will be carried out across five zones by joint field teams of the Enforcement, Roads and Medical Officer of Health wings. Adequate arrangements of vehicles, machinery and manpower have been made to ensure smooth, coordinated and orderly implementation of the drive.
The zone-wise coverage will include:
Zone 1: Sectors 1 to 20, Khuda Alisher, Kaimbwala, Khuda Lahora, Khuda Jassu, Sarangpur and Dhanas.
Zone 2: Sectors 21 to 38, Sector 38 (West), Bapu Dham, Transport Area and Dadumajra.
Zone 3: Sectors 39 to 56, Sectors 61 to 64, Buterla, Badheri, Attawa, Palsora, Maloya, Burail, Kajheri and Faidan.
Zone 4: Sector 13, Manimajra, IT Park, Kishangarh, Bhagwanpura, Shastri Nagar and Mauli Jagran.
Zone 5: Industrial Phase-I & II, Ramdarbar, Hallomajra, Raipur Kalan, Raipur Khurd, Behlana, Daria and Makhan Majra.
The concerned vendors have already been informed about their allotted vending sites and will be shifted from their existing locations to the sites allotted to them through the prescribed draw-of-lots process.
The Commissioner emphasised that all vendors who have been allotted vending sites are expected to operate only from their designated locations. If any such vendor is found operating from an unauthorised location despite having been allotted a vending site, necessary action for removal of unauthorised vending or encroachment will be taken strictly in accordance with the applicable law, rules and bye-laws.
The field teams will maintain detailed records of vendors shifted to their allotted sites, vendors found operating from unauthorised locations and unauthorised vending/encroachments removed during the exercise. A consolidated compliance report will be prepared after completion of the field operation.
The Commissioner has also directed the field teams to ensure that vendors shifted during the exercise do not resume vending from their previous locations or any other unauthorised location.
The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has reiterated that the exercise is aimed at achieving a balanced and orderly street-vending system, ensuring compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, facilitating eligible vendors at their designated sites and maintaining public spaces free from unauthorised vending and encroachments.
