Chandigarh, 24 January 2025: In a significant step towards ensuring safer roads, the Chandigarh Traffic Police organized an awareness workshop and walkathon on Road Safety as part of the ongoing National Road Safety Month-2025. The initiative was conducted under the leadership of Sh. Surendra Singh Yadav, Director General of Police, and Sh. Sumer Partap Singh, SSP/Security & Traffic, with the supervision of Sh. Lakshay Pandey, DSP/Road Safety & Development. These campaigns aimed to promote responsible driving practices among the residents of the Chandigarh.
The awareness session was held at St. Stephen’s School, Sector-45B, Chandigarh, where approximately 750 students and teachers participated in discussions about the importance of following traffic rules and maintaining road safety. Key partners in the campaign included Mr. Barry Francis, Principal of St. Stephen’s School, Chandigarh, Wing Commander G.S. Grewal, and their respective teams. Dr. Parvesh Sharma, Inspector I/C-CTP, led the awareness team, which highlighted the importance of following rules & regulations and impact of road accidents on individuals and communities. A road safety quiz was conducted, where students Sara, Kavya, Sachipreet, Veerjot Singh, and Aarav Kapur won trophies for quick and correct responses. The seminar also featured a skit by Wing Commander G.S. Grewal’s team, emphasizing helmet use and road safety. The event concluded with a pledge to uphold road safety and follow all traffic rules. Mr. Barry Francis expressed gratitude to the attendees and the traffic department officials for conducting such a valuable campaign.
In addition to above, a road safety workshop, skit, followed by a ‘Walkathon’ was organized at Post Graduate Govt. College, Sector-11, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Nehru Yuva Kendra Chandigarh, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Sh. Sumer Partap Singh, IPS, SSP/Security & Traffic, flagged off the Walkathon, which consisted of more than 150 NSS Volunteers, students, and staff members. The rally passed through internal and outer roads, covering market and residential areas. Mrs. Deepshika, acting Principal of Govt. College, Ms. Divya Monga, NSS Programme Officer, and Ms. Sanjana Vats, District Youth Officer, along with their staff, were present at the event. Dr. Parvesh Sharma, Inspector I/C-CTP, led the awareness team, which highlighted the importance of following rules & regulations and impact of road accidents on individuals and communities. The Walkathon featured road safety literature, banners, and placards to raise public awareness. It highlighted essential road safety rules, including parking in designated areas, giving way to emergency vehicles, maintaining lane discipline, and switching off engines at red lights to reduce pollution. The importance of wearing BIS-certified helmets and seat belts was also emphasized. A Road Safety Exhibition Van was set up to showcase real-life examples of road safety through videos and displays.
The Chandigarh Traffic Police urges all citizens to adhere to traffic rules and regulations for their own safety and that of others, ultimately contributing to safer roads and fewer traffic-related fatalities.
