CHANDIGARH, 19.09.24-In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, joined hands with Centre for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Panjab University, to launch 30-hours' Skill Enhancement Courses for its students. With a vision to empower students with skills that enhance their employability quotient and promote self-reliance, the college inaugurated the first course in this series- a 6-day workshop on 'Skills of Adorning Fabrics' under the aegis of its Skill Development Committee.

Principal of the college Dr. Nisha Bhargava graced the inaugural as the Chief Guest. Highlighting the commitment of the college towards ensuring skill development among students, Dr. Bhargava recounted the prestigious skill development initiatives helmed by the college in the past in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India and National Skill Development Corporation. Through examples from the glorious past of India wherein skill sets took centre stage in the indigenous Indian knowledge system and ensured a flourishing economy, Dr. Bhargava drove home the importance of skills, and asserted that cognizant of the pertinent role of skills NEP 2020 advocates the revival of skills through integration of vocational education programmes into mainstream education. She informed that it is a matter of pride that the college is the first Panjab University affiliated college to collaborate with the University for conducting short term Skill Development programmes.

On day one of the course, the Department of Fine Arts conducted workshops on Fabric Painting with Linocut Print Style and One-stroke Free Hand Painting by Mrs. Santosh Verma, Artist, Pidilite Industries, and another workshop on Block Printing by Dr. Pooja Sharma, Head, Department of Fine Arts at the college. The workshops received overwhelming response as 90 students registered for it.
