Chandigarh, October 19: The Department of Food Science at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women celebrated World Food Day 2025 with great enthusiasm and creativity through a series of informative, interactive, and inspiring activities. The celebration echoed this year’s global theme- ‘Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future’, and highlighted the importance of sustainable, inclusive, and responsible food systems.

The initiative’ MCM Hope Box’- emergency nutrition kits for disaster relief was kick started on this occasion. Students set up several thematic stalls that showcased the diverse dimensions of Food Science and Technology- from nutrition awareness and sustainable food practices to innovation and product development. Key attractions included: Food Science in Action: live demonstrations on additives, preservatives, and fermentation. Nutrismart Zone: interactive games on nutrition labeling and calorie awareness. Zero Waste Cafe: creative recipes made from food by-products, promoting zero-waste cooking. Functional Food Fiesta: immunity shots, probiotic drinks, and herbal teas. Innovative Product Launch: millet cookies, fortified beverages, and low-fat mayonnaise developed by students.

A pledge on mindful consumption was also administered, urging participants to value food, avoid wastage, and contribute to food equity. In the true spirit of the theme “When you have more than you need, build a bigger table, not a higher fence”, the department also organised a Food Sharing Drive. Faculty members contributed an assortment of sweets, chocolates, bakery products, fruits, and beverages, which were shared with the college’s support staff as a heartfelt gesture of gratitude and goodwill ahead of Diwali.

Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma lauded the efforts of the Department and commended the initiative for “promoting nutrition literacy, inspiring mindful consumption, encouraging creativity and innovation, and reinforcing the values of gratitude, sustainability, and community service.”
