MCC holds sensitisation workshop on Solid Waste Management Rules-2026
Ward-Level awareness camps on Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 be organised
Swachhata Marshals be appointed in each ward of city
Chandigarh, May 16:- The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh today organised a sensitisation workshop on implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and promotion of waste segregation at source for the Mayor and Councillors at MCC.
It was decided during the workshop that ward-level awareness camps involving all stakeholders will soon be organised across the city, while “Swachhata Marshals” will be appointed in every ward to strengthen public participation, monitoring and compliance with waste segregation norms.
The workshop was chaired by Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi in the presence of MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS, Joint Commissioner Sh. Balbir Raj Singh, Chief Engineer Sh. Sanjay Arora, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Inderdeep Kaur and other senior officials.
The workshop was attended by Councillors Smt. Prem Lata, Smt. Poonam, Smt. Taruna Mehta, Smt. Sarbjit Kaur, Smt. Harpreet Kaur Babla, Smt. Bimla Dubey, Sh. Jasbir Singh Bunty, Sh. Gurpreet Singh Gabbi, Sh. Sachin Galav, Dr. Mohinder Kaur, Smt. Geeta Chauhan, Sh. Damanpreet Singh, Sh. Naresh Panchal and Sh. Lakhbir Singh.
The councillors highlighted sanitation and waste management issues including improper disposal of flower waste in various parts of city specially near temples, waste accumulation around bus stands, hotels, dhabas and vulnerable garbage points in Daria. Concerns regarding door-to-door garbage collection, cleanliness of back lanes, monitoring of sanitation staff and waste segregation in PG accommodations and rented houses were also discussed. Issues relating to waste generated by juice vendors, non-vegetarian sale units, langar organisers, boutiques and tailoring shops were also raised during the deliberations.
City Mayor Sh. Saurabh Joshi emphasised the importance of community participation and directed officials to appoint Swachhata Marshals in every ward for awareness generation and enforcement support. He appealed to residents and commercial establishments to actively cooperate with MCC in making Chandigarh cleaner and environmentally sustainable.
The Mayor also highlighted key provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026, including mandatory source segregation, scientific solid waste management with complete prohibition on open dumping, accountability of bulk waste generators, implementation of the “Polluter Pays Principle” through user charges and enforcement measures, and digital monitoring with transparent reporting mechanisms for effective waste management across the city.

MC Chief Engineer reviews STP Maloya operations, pushes fast-track completion of AMRUT 2.0 water reuse project
Chandigarh, May 16:- The Chief Engineer of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Sh. Sanjay Arora today conducted a detailed inspection of the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Maloya to review its operational efficiency, sewage treatment processes and environmental compliance standards. Senior officers and engineers of the Corporation accompanied him during the visit.
The Chief Engineer inspected major units of the plant including inlet works, aeration tanks, clarifiers, sludge handling systems, laboratories and treated water discharge arrangements. He expressed satisfaction over the efficient functioning of the ISO-certified STP and appreciated the efforts of the operational staff in maintaining treated effluent quality well within prescribed standards.
Later, he reviewed the progress of the Tertiary Treated Water Project under AMRUT 2.0, including construction of the Underground Reservoir and allied infrastructure. Stressing timely completion, he directed officials to expedite works, stating that the project will promote water recycling, reduce dependency on potable water and strengthen Chandigarh’s sustainable urban water management initiatives.
