CHANDIGARH,05.10.24-The Equal Opportunity Cell and Women Development Cell of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Transgender Protection Cell, Department of Social Welfare, Chandigarh, organised an awareness session on ‘Welfare of Transgender Persons’. The session was conducted by Mr. Amit, Counsellor, Transgender Protection Cell, Chandigarh Administration. The expert covered a wide range of critical topics concerning transgender rights, inclusivity and discrimination. Mr. Amit detailed the impact of new bills on transgender rights, particularly concerning healthcare access and anti-discrimination measures. He sensitised the audience about the various initiatives taken by the government pertaining to welfare of transgender individuals such as pension to disabled and old age transgender person, free hostel accommodation and textbooks for transgender students, gender neutral toilets, single window in hospitals, establishment of Protection Cell, etc. The attendees had an interactive discussion with the resource person, raised questions and shared their views.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava expressed appreciation for the efforts of the organisers to raise awareness about the importance of a society that upholds the principles of justice, inclusivity, tolerance and harmony. She expressed hope that this programme will encourage open conversations to build an equitable society for all.
