CHANDIGARH, 06.02.25-Dr Sandeep Patel, Associate Professor at PGIMER, Chandigarh has described a new fracture around the ankle for the first time. It has been named as Patel- Sharma fragment.
The recent publication published in the prestigious Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Case connector, is a moment of pride for the Institute as he has described a new fracture fragment around the ankle for the first time in the world. Fractures named after its inventor are known as fracture eponyms. It is rare to have fractures named after surgeons and it is the first time a fracture has been named after an Indian Orthopaedic surgeon.
Ankle fractures are more complex to understand and needs to be treated with best understanding. The fractures when operated needs to be fixed as perfect as possible with no score for error as fixing them badly can be unforgiving in terms of results.
Dr Patel’s work in foot and ankle over the past 7 years have led to better understanding of these fractures.
In the past 1 year, Dr Sandeep Patel and their team have come up with 2 newer classifications for important fractures of the ankle joint.
