Sensitisation Session in progress-PGIMER Wins Double Accolades at ICMR DHR Centenary Celebration

Wins the Prestigious Research Excellence Award in the Overall Best Institution category & Award for Best HTA Centre in India

The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh was conferred the research excellence award in the overall best institution category in the recently held DHR ICMR Health Research Excellence Summit 2024, in New Delhi on 14th November.

The award was conferred by Smt Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health and Dr VK Paul, Member (Health) NITI Aayog. Prof Sanjay Jain, Dean (Research) PGI received the award on the behalf of the Institute.

This award was conferred to PGI in the overall best Institute category for having generated the best output from extramural research funding given by the Indian Council of Medical Research to all the medical colleges and government research institutions across the country. Along with AIIMS New Delhi, PGI Chandigarh was the only other Institute which was conferred the award under this category.

Apart from this award in overall research excellence, the PGI Chandigarh also received the award for the best HTA centre in India. This is an award which was created to honour the best institute in India undertaking policy-relevant research on Health Technology Assessment. The HTA Centre in PGI which is established in the Department of Community Medicine & School of Public Health since 2018, is led by Prof Shankar Prinja, who is a Professor of Health Economics.

Expressing his happiness at the distinct accomplishment, Prof Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER stated, “ We are honoured to receive the research excellence award at the DHR ICMR Health Research Excellence Summit 2024. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our faculty and researchers in advancing health sciences. Our achievements reflect not only our strong research output but also our commitment to translating findings into real-world applications that enhance patient care.

Elaborating on the significant strides made in research and innovation in recent years, Prof. Lal elaborated, “According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), in the year 2022, a total of 20 patents were published, out of which 10 were granted. For the period from April 1, 2023,to March 31, 2024, there were 18 patents published, 4 patents granted, and 2 patents remained unpublished. Additionally, more than ₹100 crores were generated by the institute as the extramural grant during the financial year 2023-24, reflecting robust financial support for ongoing research initiatives. This prolific output highlights the institute's focus on translating research into tangible benefits that can improve patient outcomes and influence global medical practices.”

In a concerning revelation, 14% of individuals screened at a recent camp organized by the Department of Endocrinology at PGIMER were found to have abnormal blood glucose levels, a condition they were previously unaware of.
