'Been Baja' becomes centre of attraction at International Gita Mahotsav
The traditional folk art is being performed by snake charmers of Rajasthan
Chandigarh, December 2– The International Gita Mahotsav-2024 is being celebrated at the Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra, Haryana. The festival is celebrated on the Ekadashi date of Margashirsha Shukla Paksha. However, various programmes of the mahotsav have started several days in advance.
A unique folk art on display at the mahotsav is that of 'Been Baja', a folk art performed by Rajasthan's snake charmers. The coordinator of the Been Baja party said showing the tricks with snakes by playing the Been is the main profession of snake charmers. However, after the Wildlife Protection Act-1972 and 2023 came into force, catching snakes has been made illegal due to which they have been deprived of their traditional art. Therefore, to make ends meet, they are playing the Been at weddings and other festivals. This traditional art is on the verge of extinction, so the contribution of both the government and the society is necessary for its development. The government should pay attention to providing education, health and employment to us, he said. At the same time, if the society does away with modern music playing systems like DJs and invites flute parties in weddings, it will be helpful to them in earning their livelihood.
The tunes of Been of Kalbelias of Rajasthan, which is known for the land of dunes and glorious history, are becoming a centre of attraction at the mahotsav. This folk art of Kalbelias and Kalbelia dance were included in the Amrit Cultural Heritage List released by UNESCO in Nairobi, Kenya in 2010. Gulabo Sapera of the Kalbelia community has been awarded the Padma Shri 2016 for her excellent performance of Kalbelia dance. The traditional dress of the snake charmers of the Been Baja party, the tune of musical instruments like Been Chimta, Dholak, Tumbi etc. captivated the audience at the mahotsav. The tourists visiting the festival can be seen dancing ecstatically to the tunes of the Been.
