CHANDIGARH, 02.01.25- The Hon'ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, today launched the Chandigarh Traffic Police Annual Report 2023, providing an in-depth look at the department's performance, achievements, and future plans in traffic management and road safety.

While the nation witnessed an 11.9% increase in road accident fatalities, Chandigarh achieved a remarkable 19% reduction in such incidents.

Vehicle Registration Trends

In 2023, over 50,000 vehicles were registered in Chandigarh, with the following distribution:

• Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs): 51.6%

• Two-Wheelers: 29.9%

• Buses, Three-Wheelers, and Taxis: 8.5%

Vehicle registrations in 2023 saw a slight decline of 3.2% compared to the previous year.

1) There is a decline of 24% in the total number of accident cases in 2023 as compared to 2022.

2) There is a decline of 19% in fatal cases registered in 2023 as compared to 2022.

3) There is a decline of 25% in non-fatal cases registered in 2023 as compared to 2022.

4) There is a decline of 20% in the number of persons killed in road accidents in 2023 as compared to 2022.

5) There is a decline of 16% in the number of persons injured in road accidents in 2023 as compared to 2022.

Identified Black Spots

Five critical black spots have been identified:

There are 5 Black Spots which are Airport Light Point (extended Dakshan Marg), Poultry Farm Chowk, TPT Light Point Junction, Kala Gram Light Point, and Shastri Nagar Light Point.

Enforcement and Awareness

  1. 9.2 lakh challans were issued in 2023 while in 2022, 5.52 lakh challans were issued. 66.2% increase from the previous year.
  2. A total of Rs.10.4 Crores collected as fine in 2023.

The report highlights the efforts of Chandigarh Traffic Police in enhancing road safety, improving traffic enforcement, and reducing accidents across the city. Key initiatives covered include the introduction of advanced traffic management technologies, increased use of AI-based systems for monitoring traffic, and the successful implementation of road safety awareness campaigns that reached thousands of citizens.

The Annual Report 2023 also presents future initiatives aimed at creating a safer, more efficient traffic environment for the citizens of Chandigarh.
