Chandigarh,01.09.24-To mark the observance of Eye Donation Fortnight, a spirited walkathon themed "Be the Light in Someone's Life" was organized today evening, beginning at the iconic Rock Garden and concluding at the serene Sukhna Lake. The event witnessed an enthusiastic participation of citizens from all walks of life, including faculty, residents, nursing officers, other healthcare professionals, and community members, who came together to promote the noble cause of eye donation.

The walkathon aimed to raise awareness about the importance of eye donation and to inspire people to pledge their eyes, thereby giving the gift of sight to those in need. Participants held banners and placards carrying messages of hope and compassion, reflecting the collective spirit of the community in supporting this life-changing cause.

The Walk was flagged of by Prof AK Attri, Director Principle, GMCH-32, Prof SS Pandav, Head, Advanced Eye Centre, PGI, Prof Suresh Gupta, Head, Eye Department, GMCH-32 and Mr Sushil Goyal, President of LIONS Club Central in presence of various faculty members of Cornea Department, PGI, Prof Amit, Prof Chintan and Dr Parul.
The event was organised by Eyebank Society PGI Chandigarh in collaboration with GMCH-32 and Lions Club Central.
The Director, GMCH-32, Prof. AK Attri, highlighted the profound impact of eye donation, stating, "The gift of sight is the most precious legacy one can leave behind. By choosing to donate our eyes, we can be the light in someone's life and bring hope where there was once darkness. Let us all pledge to spread this light and make eye donation a universal act of compassion."

Prof. S. S. Pandav, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology & AEC at PGIMER, emphasized the need for greater awareness and participation in eye donation initiatives. "Despite advances in medical science, the number of individuals in need of corneal transplants far exceeds the availability of donated eyes. Through events like this walkathon, we aim to educate and inspire the public to make a difference. Together, we can restore sight and transform lives," said Prof. Pandav.

The event was supported by a school kids band and 2 skits dedicated to eye donation awareness, with volunteers offering on-the-spot registrations for those willing to pledge their eyes.

The walkathon concluded at Sukhna Lake, symbolizing the light of hope and the collective commitment to eradicating corneal blindness.
