Chandigarh, December 4, 2025: In a ground-breaking clinical milestone, Fortis Hospital Mohali has successfully performed its first Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) on a 31-year-old man suffering from congenital heart disease. The procedure was conducted by Dr RK Jaswal, Head of Department and Director of Cardiology and Director - Cathlabs, Fortis Hospital Mohali. This is among the first such cases conducted by a private hospital in North India, outside the Delhi-NCR region.
The patient was admitted to Fortis Mohali with symptoms of shortness of breath, dizziness and right-sided heart failure, a condition marked by dilation and dysfunction of the right atrium (upper chamber) and right ventricle (lower chamber). This led to acute breathlessness, swelling over the entire body, liver enlargement, and early liver failure. This was severely affecting his longevity and quality of life.
Diagnostic evaluation revealed that the patient had been suffering from a congenital (from birth) heart disease and had undergone an Intracardiac Repair Surgery during his childhood. During the surgery, the pulmonary valve which was implanted -- to regulate blood flow from the right side of the heart to the lungs had gradually become damaged and dysfunctional. To address this, the patient later underwent another heart surgery at a leading hospital in New Delhi to replace the damaged valve. Unfortunately, even the second surgical pulmonary valve was unsuccessful, leading to further complications.
An open-heart surgery would have posed an extremely high risk. Hence, the team of doctors opted for a non-surgical Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) on the patient. During the procedure, a sheath was inserted through groin vein and through this, Dr Jaswal navigated a new valve to the desired place in the heart (at the junction of the right heart and main pulmonary artery) and deployed the valve precisely and successfully. The patient had a smooth recovery and was discharged the very next day of the procedure.
Giving details of the case, Dr RK Jaswal, Head of Department and Director of Cardiology and Director - Cathlabs, Fortis Hospital Mohalisaid, “Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement (TPVR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a faulty pulmonary valve using a catheter inserted through a vein in the leg or chest, eliminating the need for an open-heart surgery. The pulmonary valve regulates blood flow from the right heart to the lungs to get oxygen from the lungs. When this pulmonary valve becomes dysfunctional, the right heart fails and blood flow to the lungs is compromised. This severely impacts blood flow to the entire body. It is a minimally-invasive medical procedure to replace a damaged pulmonary valve. This involves no major cuts or surgery and there is no need for a traditional open-heart surgery. The recovery is fast and usually patients are able to go home within 24 hours. Fortis Hospital Mohali has been able to establish itself as the Centre of Excellence for Cardiac Sciences.”
