Chandigarh Administration Celebrates World Environment Day with Plantation Drive under “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” Campaign
Chandigarh, June 5: Marking World Environment Day with great enthusiasm and commitment towards environmental conservation, the Chandigarh Administration organized a plantation drive under the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. Senior officers of the Administration actively participated in the initiative by planting saplings at various locations across the city.
The Chief Secretary, UT Chandigarh, Shri H. Rajesh Prasad, along with his family members, planted saplings in the public park at Sector 7, Chandigarh. The plantation activity symbolized the Administration’s commitment to promoting a greener and healthier environment while encouraging citizens to contribute towards ecological sustainability.
The Home Secretary-cum-Secretary Forests, Shri Mandip Singh Brar, planted a sapling at the Chandigarh Bird Park. He was accompanied by Shri Saurabh Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), and Shri Anup Kumar Soni, Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, UT Chandigarh who also planted the saplings.
The officers emphasized the importance of tree plantation in combating climate change, improving air quality, and preserving biodiversity. They also appealed to citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts by planting and nurturing trees in their surroundings.
The plantation drive under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign reflects the Chandigarh Administration’s continued commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, while reinforcing the message of honouring mothers through the gift of nature.

World Environment Day 2026 Observed at Panjab University, Chandigarh
Chandigarh, June 5, 2026: NSS Panjab University, Chandigarh, in association with MY Bharat, Chandigarh and Students for Development (SFD), Chandigarh, observed World Environment Day 2026 at Panjab University under the leadership of Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Anupam Bahri, Programme Coordinator, NSS; Dr. Nemi Chand Golia, State Liaison Officer, Chandigarh; and Shri Vinay Kumar, District Youth Officer, Chandigarh. The event witnessed active participation of dignitaries, faculty members, NSS volunteers, students, and youth organizations.
Key activities included a Plantation Drive, Poster Making, Slogan Writing, Pot Decorating Competitions, and a Plog Run & Cleanliness Drive. Participants showcased innovative ideas promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The dignitaries highlighted the importance of environmental protection, sustainable lifestyles, and youth participation in conservation efforts. An Environmental Pledge was administered, and winners of various competitions were felicitated.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Anupam Bahri and the collective rendition of “Vande Mataram.”

World Environment Day 2026 Celebrated Across 450 Anganwadi Centres in UT Chandigarh
Chandigarh, June 5, 2026:The Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Chandigarh Administration, celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with enthusiasm and active community participation across all 450 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The observance was aligned with this year’s theme, “Climate Action”, aimed at promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable lifestyles among citizens.
A series of awareness and community engagement activities, including plantation drives, quiz competitions and painting competitions, were organised at all Anganwadi Centres. Children, pregnant women, lactating mothers and community members participated enthusiastically in the programmes and pledged to adopt environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives.
The celebrations focused on generating awareness about the seven themes of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) — Save Energy, Save Water, Say No to Single-Use Plastic, Adopt Sustainable Food Systems, Reduce Waste, Adopt Healthy Lifestyles and Reduce E-Waste. Through various interactive activities, participants were sensitised to the importance of sustainable living and their role in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
As part of the plantation drives, saplings were planted within Anganwadi Centre premises and surrounding community areas to promote environmental conservation and enhance green cover. Painting competitions provided children with an opportunity to creatively express their ideas on nature conservation, while quiz competitions helped strengthen awareness about environmental protection and sustainable practices.
The Department reiterated its commitment to fostering environmental awareness among children, women and communities through the extensive Anganwadi network. It emphasised that meaningful climate action begins with small behavioural changes and collective efforts at the community level.
The observance of World Environment Day across all 450 Anganwadi Centres reflects the Department’s continued efforts to integrate environmental consciousness with early childhood care, nutrition, health awareness and community development initiatives, thereby contributing towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.

BSF Western Command Conducts Mega Plantation Drive on World Environment Day
Chandigarh, June 5, 2026:The Border Security Force (BSF) Western Command observed World Environment Day on Friday with a large-scale plantation drive, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Shri Satish S. Khandare, IPS, Additional Director General, BSF Western Command, inaugurated the drive by planting a sapling at the BSF Campus, Lakhnaur. Officers, troops, civilian staff and family members participated enthusiastically in the initiative.
Saplings of native species including Neem, Peepal, Ashoka and fruit-bearing trees were planted. Addressing the participants, the ADG emphasized the collective responsibility of citizens and uniformed personnel in protecting the environment and reiterated BSF’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable India.
As part of a pan-BSF plantation campaign, similar drives were conducted across all BSF formations along the western frontier from Kashmir to Gujarat, extending up to Border Out Posts (BOPs). Special focus was given to deserts, creek areas and degraded land to help combat challenges such as desertification and soil erosion.
During the campaign, more than 65,000 saplings were planted across the western border. The ADG highlighted that BSF remains committed to its social and environmental responsibilities alongside its primary role of safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Chandigarh Child & Women Development Corporation Marks World Environment Day with Tree Plantation Drive Across Institutions

Essay Writing Competition Organized on World Environment Day
Chandigarh, June 5, 2026: On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Energy Management Cell (EMC)/State Designated Agency (SDA), Chandigarh, organized an Essay Writing Competition for the staff of the Engineering Department to promote awareness about environmental protection through sustainable development, energy conservation and energy efficiency.
Around 25 participants took part in the competition and shared their views on the importance of environmental conservation, efficient use of energy, adoption of sustainable practices and protection of natural resources for future generations.
The participants actively engaged in the event and highlighted various measures that can be adopted at both individual and community levels to safeguard the environment through responsible use of energy and resources. A pledge was also administered to encourage environmental protection and the promotion of energy conservation and efficiency in daily life.

Excise Department Takes Strict Action Against Excise Policy Violations
Chandigarh, June 5, 2026: Under the guidance and directions of Shri Nishant Yadav, IAS, Excise and Taxation Commissioner, UT Chandigarh, the Excise Department has intensified its enforcement activities to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, the Rules framed thereunder and the Excise Policy 2026-27 of UT Chandigarh.
In a recent case, it was observed that a retail liquor licensee was serving liquor to the public in an unauthorized manner by mixing “Smirnoff Minty Jamun Vodka” with ice golas (chuski) and serving the same outside the licensed premises located in the Internal Market, Sector 9, Chandigarh.
Accordingly, a show-cause notice was issued to the licensee, M/s Bajaj Spirits Pvt. Ltd., Internal Market, Sector 9, Chandigarh, by the Collector (Excise), Shri Pradhuman Singh. After due consideration of the matter, a penalty of Rs. 7 lakh has been imposed on the licensee by the Collector (Excise).
In another case, the bar licence of M/s Kaindal Hospitality, SCO 11, Sector 7, Chandigarh, has been cancelled for violation of the provisions of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914 and the Rules framed thereunder.
The Excise Department remains committed to maintaining a transparent, lawful and well-regulated excise administration in UT Chandigarh. Any person or licensee found indulging in unauthorized sale, service, storage, transportation or misuse of liquor shall be dealt with strictly in accordance with law.
