Chandigarh, August 21:- In a significant step towards strengthening environmental sustainability and ensuring effective waste management, a meeting of the Special Cell constituted for the implementation of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 was held today under the chairpersonship of Ms. Isha Kamboj, SDM (South), Chandigarh.
The meeting was attended by Sh. Balbir Raj, Joint Commissioner, MC Chandigarh, Dr. Inderdeep Kaur, Medical Officer of Health and other senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.
The Special Cell has been constituted in compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India to monitor, review and ensure the effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 across the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
During the meeting, a comprehensive review of ongoing solid waste management activities was undertaken. Discussions focused on strengthening waste collection, source segregation, transportation, processing and scientific disposal of municipal solid waste. Department-wise progress was assessed and officials were directed to ensure strict adherence to the provisions of the SWM Rules, 2026.
Chairperson Ms. Isha Kamboj emphasized the importance of coordinated action among all departments and stakeholders for achieving sustainable waste management practices and maintaining Chandigarh’s high standards of cleanliness.
She directed concerned officials to expedite pending tasks and submit regular progress reports to facilitate effective monitoring and timely implementation of all prescribed measures.
