CHANDIGARH,28.08.2026-The Department of GI Surgery, HPB & Liver Transplantation, PGIMER, Chandigarh, will celebrate its 6th Foundation Day by organising a prestigious Surgical Video Workshop and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme from August 28 to 30, 2026, with the theme “Minimally Invasive HPB Surgery.”
Highlighting the significance and academic stature of the high-profile event, Prof. Rajesh Gupta, Head, Department of GI Surgery, HPB & Liver Transplantation, PGIMER, Chandigarh, said, “Our 6th Foundation Day marks an important milestone in the journey of the Department. This year, we have chosen Minimally Invasive HPB Surgery as the central theme because surgical practice is rapidly evolving towards approaches that combine precision, technology and innovation with improved patient outcomes. Through this programme, we aim to provide an outstanding platform for surgeons to learn from leading experts, exchange experiences and understand the nuances of adopting advanced minimally invasive techniques safely and effectively.”
Prof Gupta further added, “The live and unedited surgical video sessions are particularly significant, as they will allow participants to closely examine the actual steps, technical challenges, decision-making and safety considerations involved in complex HPB procedures. The participation of renowned faculty from India, Japan and the United States will enrich the academic discussions and foster meaningful collaboration. The three-day academic programme will bring together eminent national and international experts to deliberate on the latest advances, techniques and emerging technologies in the management of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) diseases. The programme has been designed to promote technical excellence, scientific exchange, innovation and the safe adoption of minimally invasive surgical approaches.
The programme will commence on August 28 at Lecture Theatre-1, Nehru Hospital, PGIMER, with a Surgical Video Workshop, featuring unedited surgical videos and interactive discussions with distinguished national and international faculty. The workshop will focus on advanced operative techniques, including laparoscopic anatomical liver resection, minimally invasive donor hepatectomy, robotic left pancreatectomy, robotic hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgery, robotic pancreatoduodenectomy, minimally invasive surgery for chronic pancreatitis and minimally invasive radical cholecystectomy.
A major highlight of the opening day will be the prestigious 6th Prof. B. L. Talwar Oration at 4:00 PM, to be delivered by Dr. R. A. Sastry, KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad, on the topic “The Teacher Lives On: Surgical Wisdom from Prof. B. L. Talwar in the Digital Era of AI and Simulation.”
The Foundation Day CME on August 29 and 30 at Hotel Taj, Chandigarh, will cover a wide spectrum of current and emerging issues in gallbladder, biliary, liver and pancreatic surgery. Sessions will deliberate upon difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy, choledochal cyst surgery, bile duct stones, locally advanced gallbladder cancer and the oncological safety of minimally invasive surgery.
