Cameras to be Installed at Petrol Pumps to Identify End-of-Life Vehicles and Ensure Compliance with Environmental Norms: Anil Vij

Chandigarh, September 15: Haryana Transport Minister Sh. Anil Vij said that the Transport Department will install Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across the National Capital Region (NCR). He said that in the first phase, a total of 775 ANPR cameras will be installed in the major NCR districts of Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat and Jhajjar, at an estimated cost of ₹41.74 crores.

Sh. Vij said that the proposal in this regard has been approved by Haryana Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini.

The Transport Minister said that the process of installing ANPR cameras in these major NCR districts is being expedited to identify End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) and ensure compliance with environmental norms. He said that approximately 775 ANPR cameras will be installed at petrol pumps in the NCR areas of Gurugram, Faridabad, Jhajjar and Sonipat to facilitate effective identification of such vehicles.

249 ANPR cameras in Gurugram, 215 in Sonipat, 195 in Jhajjar and 116 in Faridabad

He said that the initiative is being implemented in accordance with the directions issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). A total of 249 ANPR cameras will be installed in Gurugram, 215 in Sonipat, 195 in Jhajjar and 116 in Faridabad. He said that 775 cameras will be installed across these four districts at an estimated cost of ₹41.74 crore.Vij said that approximately 2,780 ANPR cameras are required to be installed across the state. In the first phase, 775 cameras will be installed in the four major NCR districts Gurugram, Faridabad, Jhajjar and Sonipat.

Target to complete installation by September 30 to ensure effective compliance with CAQM directions

The Transport Minister said that, as per the directions of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the installation of ANPR cameras is to be completed by September 30, 2026. Thereafter, from October 1, 2026, fuel will not be supplied to End-of-Life Vehicles registered in Haryana. He said that the state government is working seriously to complete the entire process within the stipulated timeline and ensure effective compliance with the directions issued by CAQM.

Focus on effective identification of old vehicles to strengthen pollution-control efforts in NCR

Sh. Vij said that the government’s objective is not merely to install ANPR cameras, but to use the technology for the effective identification of old and End-of-Life Vehicles and to enforce the prescribed provisions relating to environmental protection. He said that compliance with the directions issued by CAQM for improving air quality in the NCR is a priority for the Haryana Government. The concerned departments have been directed to complete the necessary action within the stipulated timeframe, he added.

He stressed that ANPR technology will make the process of vehicle identification more effective and systematic and will further strengthen efforts to control pollution in the NCR.
