CHANDIGARH, 10.10.26-The National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), PGIMER, Chandigarh, observed World Mental Health Day 2026 under the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change” to promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma and emphasise the importance of empathy and recovery-oriented care.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Sukhpal Kaur, Principal, NINE, followed by a lamp-lighting ceremony. Dr. Sunita Sharma, Associate Professor, NINE, unfolded the theme, highlighting the importance of listening to individuals with lived experiences. B.Sc. Nursing third-year students presented a role-play on mental health and addiction, while S. Shamsher Singh Ji, Founder and Chief Sevadar of Prabh Aasra, Mohali, addressed the gathering as the Chief Guest.

Invited participants, including eminent speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Al-Anon, shared their lived experiences, emphasising addiction recovery, maintaining sobriety, peer support and family involvement. A yoga session for mental health was conducted by Mr. Kalyan Maity, CCRYN.

As part of the wider awareness campaign, health talks were organised in Psychiatry OPD and Drug De-addiction Treatment Centre (DDTC) areas, while poster-making competitions were held in schools and at NINE, PGIMER, engaging students in promoting mental well-being, addiction prevention and stigma reduction.

The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes and certificates, a vote of thanks by Dr. Nitasha Sharma, the National Anthem and refreshments.

Through these initiatives, NINE reaffirmed its commitment to compassionate mental healthcare and highlighted the message: Listen, Understand, Support.
