Chandigarh, Oct 23 - Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh today called upon the youth to go beyond studying the teachings of Saint Ravidas in books and curricula and incorporate his ideals into their daily lives. He urged them to stand for equality wherever discrimination exists, extend support wherever help is needed, and create opportunities for those who are deprived of them. This, he said, would be a true tribute to Saint Ravidas.

The Governor was addressing an international seminar on ‘Saint Ravidas: Parampara, Pratirodh aur Parivartan Ki Chetna’ at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Prof. Ghosh said that the vision of ‘Begumpura’ articulated by Saint Ravidas envisages a society free from fear, discrimination and injustice, where every individual enjoys dignity and equal opportunities. He emphasized the need to build an India where every child has access to education, every young person gets opportunities to realise their potential, women enjoy equal opportunities, and every individual can live with dignity. He added that building such a society is not merely the responsibility of the government but a collective responsibility of all citizens.

Use Social Media to Unite Society

The Governor observed that social media offers numerous avenues for communication and engagement. These platforms must be used to strengthen social cohesion, promote mutual understanding and encourage constructive dialogue rather than create divisions. Differences of opinion are natural, he said, but mutual respect must always be upheld. This is the hallmark of a democratic society and a vital strength of Indian culture.

He also urged universities and academic institutions to ensure that discussions on Saint Ravidas do not remain confined to one-day events. Continuous research into his literature, philosophy and social thought, meaningful dialogue among students, and wider dissemination of his teachings beyond classrooms are essential to bring his ideals into society.

“Mann Changa Toh Kathauti Mein Ganga”: Transformation Begins Within

Referring to the famous saying of Saint Ravidas, “Mann Changa Toh Kathauti Mein Ganga,” the Governor said that meaningful transformation begins within oneself. Equality in thought, respect in conduct and humanity in the heart can bring positive change from the family to society at large. He called upon everyone to resolve to make the teachings of Saint Ravidas an integral part of their daily conduct rather than limiting them to books, speeches and public platforms.

True Development Ensures That No One Is Left Behind

Prof. Ghosh said that India is advancing rapidly in technology, artificial intelligence, the digital revolution and emerging economic opportunities. However, he stressed that progress must be inclusive and ensure that no individual or section of society is left behind. True development, he said, is one in which every person, including the most disadvantaged, enjoys dignity, equal opportunities and the chance to progress. He added that the teachings of Saint Ravidas continue to offer valuable guidance for building a just, inclusive and compassionate society.

Among those present on the occasion were the Governor’s ADC, Sh Mohit Handa; Director of the Research and Development Cell at Panjab University, Prof. Savita Gupta; and Chairperson of the Department of Hindi, Prof. Ashok Kumar, along with scholars, researchers and students.
