NEW DELHI:30.12.24-Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Delhi Government has taken decisive action to address complaints from women across the city regarding buses skipping stops where only female passengers are waiting and not picking them up. Expressing the government’s commitment towards female travellers, Chief Minister Atishi announced that bus drivers or conductors found avoiding stops where women are waiting will face suspension.
CM Atishi also encouraged female travellers to record any such incidents that they notice and report it to the government through social media, assuring prompt action. She also reiterated ensuring the safety and convenience of women travelers remains a top priority for the government.
Addressing the issue, CM Atishi said, "We have received complaints from different parts of Delhi that drivers of DTC and cluster buses are refusing to stop at bus stops when they see only women waiting. They speed past, leaving women stranded. This is unacceptable."
She reassured the women of Delhi, saying, "The Delhi Government is fully committed to encouraging more women to travel by bus. This is precisely why the Delhi Government has made bus travel free for women. Because when bus travel is free for women, they are encouraged to step out of their homes. Young girls can go to college, women can travel farther for work opportunities, and as more and more women participate in the workforce and other activities, it contributes to the economic growth and development of any economy or system.”
The Chief Minister informed that to address these complaints, the Delhi Transport Department has issued strict orders to all relevant authorities. According to the directives any bus driver or conductor found avoiding stops where women are waiting will face strict action, including suspension. This applies to both DTC and cluster buses.
CM Atishi urged women to report such incidents, saying, "If you see a bus not stopping, take a photo of the bus license plate and share it on social media. The government will take immediate action based on these complaints. The driver or conductor responsible will be pulled up and suspended if found guilty."
Once again, she encouraged women to travel freely by bus, adding, "I want to assure the women of Delhi that the government is dedicated to making public transport safe and accessible for them."
Responding to a media query, she reiterated the government’s support for women passengers, she said, "The Delhi Government fully reimburses the cost of pink tickets issued to women. Whether it’s a DTC bus or a cluster bus, there is no financial loss to drivers or operators from women using these services. There is absolutely no reason for them to skip stops for women passengers."
The Delhi Government has also issued strict warnings to bus operators. "Whether the bus is from DTC or the cluster fleet, if any driver or conductor fails to stop for women, strict disciplinary action will be taken. This includes suspension of the driver or conductor involved," CM Atishi stated.
