CHANDIGARH, 31.01.25-The Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, successfully conducted 13th Prof. R. N. Chakravarti Memorial Oration on January 31, 2025 in a hybrid mode. The venue of the oration was at LT-1, Nehru Hospital, PGIMER, Chandigarh. This year the oration lecture was delivered by eminent scientist and pathologist Prof. Pranab Dey, Director of Pathology and Transfusion Medicine, National Institute of Medical Science (NIMS), Jaipur, on “Tale of computer applications in health sciences.”

The oration was introduced by Prof. Sanjay Jain,Dean, (Research), PGIMER, Chandigarh, while the speaker was introduced by Prof. Dibyajyoti Banerjee, Head, Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology. Dr. Pranab Dey talked about the use of computers to provide an objective reality in health science research, particularly through automated image morphometry for the quantitative estimation of various cellular features and DNA ploidy status of the tumour, thus improving disease diagnosis and prognosis. He emphasized on the role of fractal geometry, an advanced area of morphometry for the objective measurement of the irregularity of the objects and assessment of chromatin pattern of a nuclei. Dr. Dey also underscored the significance of artificial neural networks (ANN) in reshaping pathology, with deep learning (DL) for enhancing tumour classification and feature extraction, especially in tumor diagnosis and grading. He was also positive about the possibility of introducing a digital slide scanner along with ANN in generating a newer area defined as “computational pathology” which can cause a revolutionary change in pathology from its root level.
