PINJORE/CHANDIGARH-09.07.18-The Beautiful Saturday morning witnessed the commencement of the 27th Mango Mela that got off to a smooth start at Pinjore Gardens on Saturday (7th July). An annual event, the Mela was being hosted by Haryana Tourism jointly in collaboration with the Horticulture Department, Haryana.

The entire Garden wore a festive look, as cut-outs and props and other decorations which adorned the Mela premises like a bride. Youngsters and families enjoyed clicking pictures at the especially created ‘selfie’ points. The ‘Mughal gardens’ wore an elegant look with drapes in hues of yellow and green on the various terraces. The ambiance was set for a royal event.

Students from different schools of Pinjore and Panchkula participated with much enthusiasm in the face Painting, Rangoli and Solo Dance Competitions that started at 11.00 am. The extremely talented students performed on happening Bollywood, Punjabi and Classical Songs with elegance and dexterity. Over 450 students took part in these competitions. The popular Mango Eating Competition had students participating with much fervour and enthusiasm.

The enthralling performances by Kachchi Ghori-Jaipur, Nagada Players, been performers, Bag Piper Group, Folk Artists like Deru Folk Singers, Jogi Group– Sarangi Players, and Jangam – Shiv Devotees/Folk Performers added to the magic and Folk Environment of the Mela.

No Mela can be complete without the flavours of food and colours of shopping. The Mango Mela’s Crafts Bazaar and Food Court were a must visit. The crafts-persons from Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have came here to display their handicrafts and handlooms. The food stalls set up by State Institutes of Hotel Management of Panipat, Kurukshetra, Faridabad, Rohtak and Yamunanagar ,who were serving a variety of mouth-watering delicacies.

Sh Vikas Yadav, Managing Director, Haryana Tourism stated that the event was a platform to encourage farmers to adopt new techniques in mango growing and acted as a knowledge base for increasing the mango production. The Mela also offered visitors with an opportunity to see and taste mangoes and enjoyed the sweet festivities in this monsoon season.

A separate section devoted to display and sale of mangoes evoked a great response with visitors checking out new hybrid/variegated varieties on basis of their physical characteristics like size, colour and shape. The total entries received were 4,636 which included 250 different varieties of mangoes and various mango products like Pickle, Chutney, Jam, Squash, Aaam-papad, etc. Entries were from states like Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

There were a large number of varieties of mangoes on display -- the prominent ones being Langra, Chausa, Alphanso, Malika, Ratol, Malda, Amrapali, Ramkela, Totapari and Safeda.

One of the biggest attractions was the artists called ‘Bhehrupiye’ who hailed from Rajasthan. Posed as mythological characters like Bhagwan Bhole Nath, Narad etc, they were flocked by visitors of all ages to pose for pictures with them. The bangle maker from Delhi too added a spark to the Mela with his creations.

An attraction for the School students was competitions like Drawing and Group Dances and Fancy Dress conducted and Mango Eating Competition was open for all. Ghazal Singer Dr. Radhika Chopra performed live with her soulful singing.

On the conclusion of Mela on Sunday, the Prize Distribution and Closing Ceremony of the Mango Mela was performed by Sh. Vikas Yadav, Managing Director, Haryana Tourism .
