Mahendergarh, 20.03.25-Department of Psychology and Department of Sociology, Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendergarh organized a sensitization workshop on transgender rights, sponsored by the National Institute of Social Defense, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the legal rights, social challenges, and healthcare needs of transgender persons. The program started with the faculty and esteemed guests lighting up the lamp.

Prof. (Dr.) Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor, extended his congratulations to both departments and commended their collaborative efforts.He emphasized the importance of addressing such a crucial yet often overlooked topic and reassured participants of the university’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all genders. Moreover, Prof. Kumar emphasized the significant contributions of the Wellness Clinic, which is run by the Department of Psychology, in advancing mental health awareness and promoting overall well-being within the community. Since its inception at the university campus, the Wellness Clinic has provided invaluable free counseling services to students and staff of the University. Professor Kumar recently announced an exciting development regarding the Wellness Clinic. As part of a community enrichment initiative, the clinic will begin offering its services free of charge to residents of surrounding villages. This effort aims to improve the overall health and well-being of the community by providing access to essential wellness resources and support.
The program commenced with a welcome address by the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Payal Kanwar Chandel, who introduced the audience to the workshop's objectives and purpose. Dr. Jaswant Kumar, Transgender Complaint Officer, CUH emphasized the importance of inclusivity in educational spaces. The technical sessions covered critical aspects of transgender issues. Yashwinder Singh (Transgender Welfare Board, Chandigarh) delivered a session on "Transgender Rights: A Socio-Legal Perspective," highlighting the evolution of transgender laws in India and their role in promoting social justice. Ms. Manpreet (Program Officer, Pahal Foundation) spoke on Stigma and Transgender: An Overview of Social Issues, addressing the discrimination and exclusion faced by transgender individuals. Dr. Manish Bamrotiya (Deputy Chief of Party & Technical Director, Accelerate, Johns Hopkins University) discussed "Transgender Persons and HIV: Addressing Health Inequities through Rights-Based Approaches," emphasizing the need for equitable healthcare and HIV prevention strategies.
A personal experience session by Nargis, an ex-student of CUH who transformed her gender identity, offered an inspiring story of resilience. Dr. Renu Yadav, MBBS, MD Gynecologist and IMA member, concluded the discussions with "Gender Development and Reproductive Health of Gender Diverse Individuals," focusing on medical and psychological aspects of gender transition. The workshop concluded with a valedictory session led by Prof. Payal K. Chandel, who distributed certificates to participants and volunteers. The event successfully fostered meaningful discussions on transgender rights, advocating for greater inclusivity and social acceptance. Dr. Reema Gill extended a formal Vote of thanks to the National Institute of Social Defence, the Vice Chancellor, all the resource persons, the volunteers, participants, and entire University functionaries for aiding in the smooth organization of the workshop.
