NEW DELHI:01.11.24-Delhi’s law and order is unraveling as criminals operate with impunity, sparking terror across the city—an outcome of the BJP-led Central Government’s neglect, says Delhi Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj. With fearless gangsters carrying out brazen murders and robberies on the streets, the Urban Development Minister points out to the Central Government of turning a blind eye, even as imprisoned gang leaders continue their operations unhindered. Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj demands answers from the BJP, arguing that their repeated failure to ensure safety in the capital has left Delhi’s citizens living in constant fear.
Highlighting Delhi's worsening Law and Order, Delhi Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, in a press conference, stated, “Yesterday, while the country celebrated Diwali, a family celebrating in the Shahdara area was brutally attacked. Armed criminals barged into and openly shot two family members dead. When a nephew tried to intervene and save them, they shot and killed him as well. Such incidents in broad daylight show how deeply Delhi’s law and order situation has deteriorated.”
The Delhi Urban Development Minister pointed out that the worsening security climate in Delhi over recent months, marked by a spate of serious crimes. “The situation has become so dire that it’s not unusual to hear of 60 rounds of gunfire at a time. Bomb blasts are occurring across the city, criminals are entering showrooms to extort money, demanding ransom, protection money, and threatening business owners with violence.
“Car showrooms have been targeted with 20-22 rounds fired in these incidents, hotel owners have been attacked, and even sweet shops have been invaded with demands being made. Such lawlessness in the nation’s capital is leaving people too frightened to step out of their homes,” he added.
Citing a news item published on the front page of an English newspaper two days ago, Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that it is clearly written in this newspaper that Lawrence Bishnoi and the Bhau gang were already active in Delhi. With a third gang now active in Delhi, organized crime has proliferated in Delhi. “This was once seen only in places like Mumbai, where the underworld was dominant, extorting money from Bollywood stars and builders alike. Murders, ransom calls, threats to film personalities, and cases of extortion, including the 1990s murder of Gulshan Kumar (Owner of the T-Series), defined those times in Mumbai.”
Expressing concerns over the central government’s role in allowing these criminal activities to flourish, the Delhi Minister questioned the weakening of Delhi’s law enforcement. “But today, this environment has emerged in Delhi. The current climate of fear is unimaginable. This rise in gang activity could not have happened without lax law enforcement. The central government has allowed Delhi’s security system to become so feeble that even gang leaders from jail are controlling these operations. This situation raises serious questions that need to be answered.”
Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj referred to an incident that has attracted international attention—the recent theft of a French ambassador’s phone in Delhi. “This is not only deeply embarrassing for our country but has surely affected India’s image across Europe. The fact that a diplomat could face such an incident speaks volumes about our current state of law enforcement. When this news reached France, it no doubt sparked concerns across Europe about Delhi’s security environment.”
“When asked, their MPs and ministers offer no answers. The Lieutenant Governor, who seems to be an expert on everything else, has chosen to remain silent on this critical issue of public safety. Delhi’s people deserve an answer: if they cannot maintain law and order in the capital, how can they claim to govern Delhi?” asked the Minister, calling out central agencies.
Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated. “Delhi’s citizens are now living in constant fear. People hesitate to even mention these gang names, as they live under an oppressive sense of dread. When we visited a showroom in Rajinder Nagar where 22 rounds were fired, we saw families who were too terrified to return home, unsure if and when the next incident would happen. Despite repeated requests, the police have not provided adequate assistance. It’s become nearly impossible for people to move around safely, unsure where or when violence may strike.”
Highlighting the daily fears faced by Delhi’s residents, he commented, “It’s come to the point that women no longer carry their phones in their hands during morning walks, nor do they wear gold chains when stepping out to markets, as chain and phone snatching has become rampant. People have stopped reporting these crimes because they feel it’s a waste of time; filing complaints doesn’t seem to yield results. This reflects the pervasive fear in every Delhi colony.”
Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also criticized the lack of police accountability in these cases. “Despite the CCTV footage being readily available, there’s no assurance of justice. Even in my own constituency, people have provided CCTV evidence of crimes to the police, yet little action is taken. This is not an isolated issue. It’s disgraceful that only because the recent victim was a French diplomat were efforts made to track down the culprits. What about the security of everyday citizens?”
The Urban Development Minister emphasized the stark contrast between the central government’s indifference and the mounting public fear, describing a visit to the showroom where the French ambassador’s phone was stolen. “When the ambassador reported the theft in France, how do you think that made us look internationally? We are being seen as unable to protect even foreign diplomats. Meanwhile, the central government dismisses this as normal, saying nothing. Their representatives, including MPs and ministers, have no answers. Even our LG, who manages everything except his main responsibility, has no solutions to offer.”
“It’s clear why Delhiites haven’t given them this responsibility for 27 years. If they can’t manage something as essential as law and order, how can they claim to govern? The present situation is a shameful indictment of our current system, and it demands immediate and meaningful intervention,” asserted Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.
